Abhomine “Larvae Offal Swine” CD / LP
Osmose prod. / Hells Headbangers prod.
After a long hiatus and before resurrecting – again- Angel Corpse, Pete Helmkamp announces the release of another side project of his, entitled Abhomine.
Ok, you can say whatever you want about his former projects, such as Terror Organ, Kerasphorus (which I still believe to be his most successful project), Feldgrau, etc etc. BUT, at least you’ll have to recognize that all of them are quite different from one another, be it in concept, perpective, and musical approach. And in such terms, Abhomine is not an exception. Granted, as Mr. Helmkamp is the only composer, then you’ll notice certain similitudes in sound and they way he handles his lyrics, which, I do believe they are different perspectives of his doctrine of Heretic Supremacist applied to different circumstances and realities from which the lyrics are inspired in the first place.
Abhomine has its distinct sound of course. As stated before, there are resemblances in how the riffs were composed but they do have their own sound and arrangements. And I’d have to say that the riffing, as well as the guitar work on this album, is buried in the mix, and for the most part it is unintelligible. And I’m pretty sure that it has been done on purpose, but even if I try to find his personal perspective applied for the listening experience to this album, I just can’t. For the most part, the songs just sound too similar. I won’t say there aren’t stand out moments, but all in all, Larvae Offal Swine is a pretty flat album.
Abigor “Leymotif Lucifer” LP / CD
Avantgarde prod.
Lucifer Worship and man’s relationship with seven sins including indulgences. Abigor after many years now have returned with an album dedicated to the worship of Lucifer and the relationship of man with earthly “sins”. Musically, they have developed the experimental approach shown with the previous “Fractal Possession”. This album is even more experimental and complex, therefore is very difficult to describe. Reviewing a musically abstract album is impossible. The commitment shown on the compositions themselves are worth the wait alone. Because, the songs themselves, differ from any conventional structure. But they stand as one and that’s the reason why I’d suggest to listen to this album in its entirety.
The vocals deserve an special mention: as you may probably know they were handled this time by Silenius, and of course, they are developed from his personal perspective. Not too heterogeneous this time, with the exception of some chorals which enhance the delivered message during some climatic moments.
This, in fact is a difficult album to digest. But you should take it as what it is: a solemn adoration of Lucifer as a revolt to human spirit and “consciousness”.

Abigor “Totschläger-A Saintslayer’s Songbook”
World Terror Committee Prod.
What surprises me about Abigor is that they have the ability to re-invent their sound with every release, following the given concept and pattern of a determined album. You won’t find a repeated or cloned album on their entire discography. And believe me, this is a common and safe practice in which many bands indulge in just to keep themselves on the spot.
“Totschläger” is an album which musically and lyrically visits the “origins” and transcendence of the Devil with the pompous grandeur that this represents. And I say musically because what else could be the accompaniment to this, than the use of bombastic elements of classical scores which not only enhances, builds character, creates climax and explodes with relentless fury?? From the Fall of Satan which means His Rise from JHV exemplified by the opening track “Nightside Rebellion”, through the rest of the tracks bridged in such a way that they become one: “Into Darkness, through nine hells”, until the mid summit of the album is achieved: “Scarlet Suit For the Devil”, where the mundane mind of man means nothing to the immensity of Satan and the Cosmic Chaos. It is interesting to note the symbiosis existing between the rabid sonic elements of this album, the classical and the melodic passages, and the way that Silenius’ vocals navigate through all of this. With this band, listening to an album requires contemplation and examination, and sometimes it is difficult to apprehend what they have tried to do, but surprisingly, this wasn’t the case I believe.
How could I describe “Totschläger” then? Everytime I listen to this, I keep remembering the words: “Solemnity washed into the Void with a flood of Wrath”. And this flood of Wrath is awaken again unexpectedly with the closing song: Terrorkommando Eligos.
Honestly, I have thought that Abigor had reached one of their peaks with Leytmotiv Luzifer but with Totschläger I have realized that they are capable of even more.
Acherontas /Shibalba/ Arditi /Puissance 4 way split LP/CD
“Pylons of the adversary” – W-T-C. Prod.
I was expecting this 4 way split for a long time, and I must admit that it was mostly because of Puissance’s contribution.
First of all, this is not an “independent” split by any means, as one member from Acherontas has participated also in Shibalba and Puissance.
And Acherontas’ side is the longest of all bands as well. I must admit that Acherontas contribution is easily the best part of the whole split, with their original brand of BM, and adorned by an atmospheric intro/outro done by Scorpios A.
But this fact doesn’t excuse them of contributing with Puissance’s track which, by the way, turned out to be an atmospheric / spoken outro for the whole split, and not a symphonic track that I expected from them.
Shibalba seems to be an ambient track performed by a member from Acherontas. Only Arditi seems to be independent from any collaboration, and both tracks are unsoiled Arditi samples of grandeur.
This 4 way split is what I expected with the exception of Puissance.

Acherontas ”Psychic Death” LP/CD
Agonia records.
The well known Hellenic Coven returns with a new offering, after being closed their previous cycle as a trilogy; and with this album, they should reset their work and at the same time evolve with the fruits of their own experience. Re-invent themselves, transcending… and so it appears the Jungian term “Psychic Death”, which gives name to this album. With this, and with everything that this entails and enhanced by the occult symbology of the cover (sub consciousness towards consciousness through empiricism exemplified by the Clavicula Nox), the band offers one of the most ambitious albums so far.
I believe that their previous album, Faustian Ethos, was at the same time the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new offering. But what does Psychic Death has to offer from a musical perspective? From the intense, fast and intricate opening that is “Paradigms of Nyx”, to the meditative closing of “Magick of Mirrors”, this album offers a variety of influences ranging from fast, abrasive and extremely melodic Black Metal with emphasis of a lead guitar guiding the labyrinth of the tracks, to the added elements of heavy rock which would serve to resonate and multiply the solemn and emotional passages of the songs. There is so much going on here, the album is not linear and the title track serves as a cracking point for the remain of the album which evolves until the last notes of the transcendental ending track is played. You will have to discover what they have to offer by yourself. Acherontas is a band which refuses to remain static and safe. As they have stated on their booklet, life is an intelligence test.
Ad Noctum “Arrogance” CD
Undercover recs.
Well, as the flyer indicates, this is Danish band features members of the well known Denial of God, Victimizer and Church Bizarre, and, as you may suppose, Ad Noctum as a Black metal band has influences of all the mentioned bands. Allright, they’re good musicians and have the ability to perform immaculately every black hymn presented on this album, although on the lyrical side they’re not capable of running an strong Black Metal entity. The lyrics may be offensive to the christian creed, but I’d say that’s all they have to offer on that field.

Aethyrick “Praxis” LP/CD
The Sinister Flame productions.
From time to time you encounter albums which are neither a challenge nor a commodity to listen to. Albums which may seem rooted within a specific framework of music but instead they turn out to be something different or innovative without distancing themselves from their basic core.
Finland’s Aethyrick is one of these bands. When everything seems to be written and done in the realm of atmospheric and melodic black metal, you encounter a band whose primary virtue resides not necessarily in their complexity, but in the smart “Praxis” they have developed in order to conduct their songs.
The songs themselves develop and unfold themselves in a very natural and smooth manner, starting to build their atmospheres with riffing which would be familiar somehow but they have the ability to delve into a labyrinthine net of roots which seem to be hidden for the common eyes but which eventuality may find their way into the grandiosity of a temple hidden in the wickedness of nature.
“The roots of those trees
are the pillars of our shrines
and with devotion we nourish them”
And that’s exactly where the nature of Aethyrick’s resides: the communion with the Sinister in nature and the smart, almost Wagnerian building of their songs, which seem a rarity among the bands from today whose mere virtue seem to reside in their artificial and soulless brutality. Aethyrick may not display this artificiality, but their harmony and hidden connection with the Sinister shows a more tangible bond with the essence of black Metal.
Aethyrick “Gnosis” LP/CD
The Sinister Flame Records.
There are many ways to approach and decipher an album and piece of art. It depends of many factors: the way it is presented, written, developed and exposed to the potential listeners. But in this particular case, how should anyone approach Gnosis after their previous work Praxis was exposed and given for its own particular study?
“With Praxis comes Gnosis”, the band stated on their interview for the Sinister Flame Issue 6. In such a way, there is a hint about how the whole work of this band should be approached coherently. But what does this really mean? How does the development from Praxis to Gnosis established itself and developed properly? How could this development be perceived after listening to both albums?
“Praxis” was an album whose very own labyrinthine nature and exploration in riffs and sounds was a mean to develop itself into something tangible which would mirror the exploration that represented that album. But how does this transition would result into this album? Into “Gnosis”?. IS this labyrinth just an exploration in sound which would sediment itself into the very roots and more tangible approach of the 90’s sound of Black Metal?
Without sounding formulaic, “Gnosis” shows a gradual descent into a solidified vision of 90’s Black Metal, and, being this whole work a result of a gradual and continuous journey, I would dare to say that the last track, “Golden Suffering”, is the Jewel of the Crown and exemplifies the gradual direction this album was heading. But not only music-wise. Those lyrics are also a reflection of this journey. “And eventually, the songs ceased, the altar was overturned, our Temple fell to rubble, abandoned by all but ordeal, our hearts were shaped anew”.
Where will this journey lead the listener in the forthcoming installment of Aethyrick’s communion with nature and His presence at last?
Personally, I do appreciate a little more the experimentation of “Praxis”, even if the hints of 90’s black metal are more present on “Gnosis”. However, there are still surprises to be found and enjoyed.
AETHYRICK - Pilgrimage
"Honestly, after the cycle of the triad 'Praxis, Gnosis, Apotheosis', I thought that the life cycle of this Finnish band was over, and accomplished. I was wrong of course, as 'Pilgrimage' is their follow up album.
I’ve listened to all three first albums in a row just to feel nearer the progression and differences between them, and compare these to this new album 'Pilgrimage'. Aethyrick is a band which is not only prolific, and in the process, is able to maintain their quality and keep developing their sound and the ideas behind sounds. Being an atmospheric band, it is indispensable to keep the elements of aesthetics, art, concept and music tied together in order to give the whole music a coherent meaning and portray the correct image to the listener. With 'Pilgrimage', they have managed to achieve this and in the process, maintain the original essence of the band. This time, risking their music with a higher dose of melody and a sense of immersion, which serves to unlock little by little the whole of the idea and history behind the album. As the cover relates, with murder and the beholding of the sun, a gateway opens for the Self to discover itself in a real meaning, going beyond, knowing the Stars and finding a Temple, achieving an awakening while others would find only doom and despair.
The album builds climax in the process of discovering itself and developing its purpose through layers of atmospheric and melodic black metal enhanced by the ethereal keyboards, which do not take a prominent role in the whole picture, but they are there at certain sections and passages.
The band still continue, prolific as always and in such a way I’m curious to find out to what ethereal place will they lead us on their forthcoming releases."

Aethyrick “Death is Absent” LP/CD
End all Life Productions.
Basically I’ve found myself reviewing this band since the release of their demos so in a way I think that I’ve been following step by step their progression and their development. Look, usually it is very rare to find bands which after the second or third album just lose direction or become tired and losing creativity or even motivation, and they will continue until the last remnants of light within their psyches is extinguished. Only a few manage to keep going with the same force and fire which enables them to release interesting albums.
Finland’s Aethyrick is one of these bands. Their career spawning album after album could be considering as escalating, an album being not only the continuation of the previous but also a natural development which lead them one step higher into musical and conceptual output.
“Death is Absent”, by following these directives, is one of the best (if not their best IMO) album so far. The band have managed to master their sense of melody and nostalgic / melancholic approach to their music and inject a higher dose of it into the listener. If the previous album was memorable enough, this is even more interesting because they have reached a point where they know where they are heading to. Their musick is definitely injected more easily into my psyche, making me remember their melodies and certain passages over and over. Could this be called an easy approach? Very unlikely, but the result of experimenting and developing carefully their art without shooting randomly into the dark.
Lyrically, the mere presence and functionality of death seems inherently futile and useless, not only a liberation but a transition which seems useless but the greater purpose which lies beyond. If you’ve following the band lyrically from the beginning you’ll notice this ascension. So I’m pretty curious to discover how high are they capable to go. Let’s keep waiting for more.

Akhkharu «Celebratum » CD
Silcharde Records.
Ok, for those who haven’t experimented this band yet, I should say that Akhakharu is a deceased project featuring members of Absu, Equimanthorn which released demo tapes during the mid-nineties, and, sadly, they were lost in time. Fortunately Silcharde records compiled a few tracks from those tapes and released it as a testament of a very good black ambient project which didn’t get the attention it deserved.
It’s very hard trying to describe a band of this nature in a review, as their sound don’t folow any kind of pre-determined pattern. All I can say is that Akhkharu tried to paint, with the use of industrial elements, chantings and recitations, the atmosphere of a ritual with different cultural backkgrounds, but mostly dedicated to the Sumerian Lore. The atmosphere created for these sonic rituals is inmense indeed, and has to be experienced. These are a very basic description. Just buy this release whose layout and prewsentation was done very carefully in order to re-assemble a grimoire.
Akolyytti s/t CD
Breath of Pestilence
After nothing less than 9 years of being formed, this Finnish act of traditional Black Metal at last are able to release their debut album. When the term “traditional” is mentioned, many would think about re-creating an already overdone sound ad nauseam. Well, as a matter of fact Akolyytti have achieved not only composing an album which remains within the traditional boundaries of a genre but at the same time able to raise a brow from time to time proving wrong to any early preposterous conception. They have decided to stay minimalistic in form, presentation, even by describing their tracks and not including lyrics, a logo adorning exclusively their front cover and filling the rest of their layout with pentagrams and whatnot. But, as always the surprises are hidden inside the whole package and within the meat of the matter, and this band have managed to do exactly that: offer something expected in melodic black metal and at the same time keeping the listener’s attention with sparks of unexpected arrangements, and well executed solos influenced from heavy metal. I would have wanted to read their lyrics but perhaps the chosen choice was done on purpose and keeping things simple and mysterious was a priority here.
Altar of Perversion “Intra Naos” 3LP/2CD
AJNA Offensive / Norma Evangelium Diaboli.
This is one of those bands which take their time carefully in order to plan, arrange and compose (or rather I would say channeling energies) into their music. Their previous album, which surprisingly is out of print for many years now, called “From Dead Temples” was a retrospective work rooted in the very fundaments of Black Metal which at the time, was quite a statement among many puerile and artificial acts which could be labeled as anything but Black Metal.
But let’s move into “Intra Naos” itself. As you probably know, this album has crossed several stages of development since its very conception, was defined and redefined over and over until it reached the final state presented here.
“Mirroring the Void
Merging into it
Through Contemplation
My mind leaps into Acausal dimensions
Under Hekatean half Moon light
A Mask of Baphomet”
That, to my own understanding, resumes the experience that is Intra Naos. These 6 long tracks which form the album are not to be seen just as commonly arranged or composed songs, but rather an introspective to the Acausal emanations flowing through the musicians which serve as living Nexions. These songs, devoid of any common structure, start to flow and simply develop themselves through several layers of sound which constantly morph and develop themselves, infesting everything and becoming a breathing unity, which flows immersing yourself into the dark emanations mirrored by this album:
“AS the light of a distant star hides a Nexion / Whence dark divinities flow into this universe / From the black abyssal source of Sinister Shadows”
Therefore, I should state that “intra Naos” is not an album which serves as mere purposes sought after by the common listeners. It is but a journey into the recesses of the mind and the manifestation of the darkness which lie in the plane of the acausal. Therefore, I could totally justify the long tracks because they do serve a purpose in themselves.
Describing everything, track by track, would be a near to impossible task as this album is meant to be experienced instead of just listened or described as a mere product. In such a way, this album, to my own understanding, was meant to be listened to in its entirety instead of fractioned listenings, as it is a unity and the proof that Black Metal is meant to be more than just music.
Amestigon / Heretic Cult Redeemer split LP/CD
World terror Comitee prod.
Very few splits connect the bands involved in some way or another, and I’d say that this one is one of them. Heavy weight Austrian Black Metal band Amestigon have joined forces with the newer but important Greek Black Metal act Heretic Cult Redeemer, which had an enormous boost with their second opus called “Kelevsma”. Here, in this split, both bands collaborate with a part of the totality of the presented concepts, with some aesthetics inspired by Kenneth Grant.
Amestigon start the split with a track which perfectly sets the pace and substance of the whole concept and musical settlement. With a verse being recited and the musical crescendo in course, they have developed a long track pretty much in the vein of their predecessor “Thier”. Dense, suffocating atmospheres deriving into hypnotic outcome which sets the place for the following track (also, a long track) by Heretic Cult Redeemer; with a sound already established on their album “Kelevsma”. Dissonant yet strong riffing and a well placed acoustic section which initiates the final stage of the collaborative concept. I cannot see this split as mere tracks placed for their own sake; they complement and collaborate each other, they form a part of a unit, and in that sense, this splirt is one of the surprises of 2019.
Among Disaster “Eclesiastical Damnation” CD
Necronausea Records.
This band come from Venezuela, and this is their debut. And of course, Necronausea records bets for their sound and success. Despite of the hard times that Venezuela is facing currently, Among Disaster comes with this hell of an album with crystal clear and powerful production, and playing a kind of mid tempo death metal influenced by the European old school sound. This mid tempo, is very well complemented by a well balanced heaviness, accurately played solos and lyrical content focused upon anti clericalism and horror mainly. Honestly, I have nothing negative to say about this one, as by far is one of the best Death metal albums coming from Venezuela and that is to say a lot.
The visual presentation is top notch, as Necronausea is worried about delivering a accurate visual `effort. Give this band a try.
Among Disaster / Spawn of Annihilation split CD
Necronausea records
This is a good release for those who want to know more about both bands, in care you’re interested in purchasing their full lengths. Among Disaster, coming from Venezuela, and very much following the steps of their album “Eclesiastical Damnation”, participates with a brand new EP released in 2018 called “Death Shall Rise Again”, which again is a Death metal with influences from the European sound and hints of melodies, which is also exemplified with the featured cover songs, one from the also Venezuelan band Morbus and the other by the well known Stephen Wolf. Even if their sound is not original and it has been done on a few occasions already, you will get a taste of an honest band which know what they are doing and it is pretty interesting to listen to.
As for the side of the Mexican Spawn of Annihilation, they present their EP called “Inquisitor of Lies” from 2013 which is a precursor of what is to come next, their full debut album that is. They, unlike Among Disaster, have another perspective of presenting their death metal. They are more oriented towards American Brutal Death metal with blasphemic lyrics. Then again, they are not re-inventing the wheel but I believe they are good in what they’re doing. I’m not very familiar with the kind of death metal they play so I couldn’t compare it with another acts of the same kind. But given that premise, it is up to you to check them out and find out for yourselves how this band deliver the goods.
Also, known to the high standards of Necronausea records when it comes to presentation and aesthetics, this cd comes with a very detailed booklet with extra artwork, lyrics, biographies and whatnot. Support.
Arcada “Projections” LP/CD
Edged circle prod.
It is interesting the course of development given by a determined band, especially if it is a young band. Peruvian Black Metal young band Arcada seems to be a somewhat special case in the sense that their course of development has been given not by the way they have syncretized their compositions nor the way they have developed a unique and independent sound, but by the way they have taken a given style and mutated it in a way that it could be taken as theirs without altering their form and essence. From their blatantly generic and amateurish promo I was given at a show a few years ago, through a series of demo tapes and their goal that is this album.
Arcada isn’t re-inventing the wheel in any way. They don’t. They offer a perspective of a sound that at this point has been visited and revisited by many, many bands. In the 90’s they could have been labeled as another norsecore with basic and minimalistic riffing played in loops in the course of the entire track. But, very much like their Swedish counterparts Malign and Ondskapt, they have opted to spice their sound with the aid of a new instrument: the vocals. Their frantic and chaotic vocals in a way succeed in giving their exasperatingly repetitive song structures a little bit of variety, and this variety is of course related to the gnostic neoplatonic perspective of the demiurge in opposition to the true god. But does this combination succeed in the long run? What I can appreciate about this band is their enthusiasm in creating good and interesting riffs which are diluted throughout the never ending repetition that may become their songs. This may work for some, for others don’t. I’m still believing that after a number of listening sessions, their songs could be more bearable if they were shorter, definitely. As I said above, they aren’t contributing anything new to the genre but at least they are trying to keep it interesting enough. So, take your choice.
Archgoat / Satanic Warmaster « Lux Satanae » LP / CD
Hells headbangers prod.
This is quite an interesting split indeed. Not only because unites 2 of the most important Finnish black metal acts, but because of the nature of the material presented herein :
First os all, comes the well known and almost archaic band Archgoat. On previous reviews, I haven’t been too fond of this band, even more, I’m not even interested in their oldest stuff, which, I consider it to be extremely minimalistic but extremely pretentious as well. This, however, have changed at least with their new album. All in all, they have re-recorded some older songs for ths release, but, luckily, have taken enough care in doing it, that their sound is extremely tight and if possible, differently arranged.
As for Satanic Warmaster, they have also re-recorded all songs, or better said, re-recorded different versions of old songs, arranged in a completely new way of the previously recorded versions, which turns this album into a completely new listening experience.
Arditi “Imposing Elitism” LP/CD
Equilibrium Music.
This album was released on tape some time ago for some strange reason. Because, after this happened, Equilibrium Music from Portugal released on cd and LP as well.
Well, Arditi is a well known act in the Martial industrial circle. And I have reviewed several albums from them in the past, and even I’ve interviewed them some years ago.
Arditi’s approach to the genre is very well defined at this point. They know how to sound like they do and at the same time adding a few differences without losing its essence. “Imposing elitism” is not an exception. Although this time the band don’t rely too much on the use of spoken samples but they have written their own lyrics which are spoken in an authoritative way, and spiced with military percussion, orchestral passages and even folk hints, creating an atmosphere of oppression and grandeur.
I have not much to say about this band, if you have heard of it, then you’ll know this is a must buy.

Arditi “Emblem of Victory” LP/CD
Blooddawn prod.
I have reviewed Arditi in the past. Moreover, they have been interviewed many years ago for this publication. And since their very beginning, they have created their own sound and re-inforced it with every release. After more than 20 years of being formed, Arditi is doing here what they are the best at: A re-interpretation of oppressive, warlike and nostalgic atmospheres enhanced by the inclusion of martial speeches portraying strength and identity. That may sound as nothing new under the sun, but on each and every release this Swedish duo pour small and noticeable differences that set apart each release from the rest. This time, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic, the songs are more martial, strong and less melodic than their previous album (although officially released afterwards) called “Insignia of the Sun”. It would be pointless trying to describe each track as the approach is similar and work as a whole, as a collective entity. Therefore, is there a reason why keep buying Arditi new albums? Indeed. For those able to differentiate each proposal, every album offers a new perspective and a new experience for all interested in Martial Industrial music with an identity.
Ares Kingdom « Incendiary » CD/LP
Nuclear War Now !
Their previous album was a solid death-thrash album, with obviosu hints of what used to be the well known act Order From Chaos. But this time they have added new elements to their music, epic and heavy metal oriented melodies which have enriched their already solid proposal. Honestly, I expected another “Return to Dust” but this time they surprised me with a fresh, melancholic and energic album. They lyrics are still focused on philosophy and historical conflicts. Their “very metal sound” production is till present here, and obviously I can’t complain about the overal production, neither any other aspect of the album. Give it a try, few bands can capture the essence of what real death/thrash metal is.
Arghoslent / Martial Barrage split CD / LP
Drakkar Productions.
It’s understandable why both bands decided to do an split together, as certain resemblances are pretty obvious in terms of lyrical approach. But not in the content and way of saying things per se. Arghoslent is a commando which pours venom through their historically inspired lyrics, while the Canadian Martial Barrage are more interested in historical conflict as a phenomenon worthy to be narrated.
Anyway, also both bands present different perspectives when it comes to the music. As usual, Arghoslent’s core is the well constructed riffs with Heavy metal influences, while Martial Barrage offers a harsh and brutal kind of death metal, much better worked than their previous material. Ah yes, this album was definitedly worth the wait...
Arkheth “IX & I: The Quintessence of Algaresh” 2CD
Obsidian records.
I thought that the kind of Black metal performed by Emperor during the “Anthems...” era was already lost in time. In fact, every band with a similar approach offered nothing less than a mediocre result. Therefore, when I received this, and knew that this monster of an album is nothing less than almost 2 hours length, I was pretty sure of two things: Either this is a masterpiece or a mammoth full of uninteresting and repetitive riffs. Fortunately this isn’t the case. In fact, “Algaresh” is an album which kept me glued to my seat during its entire length (10 songs in almost 2 hours!).
But I must say however, that this band, although heavily influenced by early Emperor and similar acts, have managed to compose an album which base their symphonies in melancholic, majestic and evocative driven riffs instead of a darker direction. And they have managed to do it properly. So, sit down, turn the lights off and enjoy the cold journey to the stars.
Contact: www.obsidianrecords.com
Arktogaa “Aera Yersinia Pestis Spiritvs” CD
Breath of Pestilence records.
After their well received demo tape it was understandable that this band would release a full length soon. And they have taken full advantage of their signing, because this debut album is a titanic work for a band which only had one demo out. This album is long, very long I’d say, but the band have been clever enough to include an interlude which would serve as a bridge for the second part of the album itself. As for the album itself, well, they have taken two songs from their demo which smoothly take part into the whole concept, as the songs, even if they embrace several aspects of the archetypes and ideals of NSBM and their relationship and harmony with Nature and the Decline of the Modern world and War as Means and objective to achieve these Ideals.
As for the songs themselves, they are basically focused into mid paced and catchy Black Metal spiced with sections of keyboards which lend the music a dose of tragic grandeur, and the best example of this would be the track “Unter dem Hakenkreuz”, which serves as bombastic climax for the first part of the album and before the interlude takes place.
On the second section of the album, the tracks continue in the same vein, with an emphasis with the nature of Conflict and Warfare in contrast with the first section of the album, having as one of the peaks the RAC inspired songs also appeared on their demo. This second section, also ends bombastically with the long Epilogue called “We Hail His Return”, which makes me remember a track from their demo, building tension intermixed with Speeches from Hitler and R. Hess. Having navigated through the long journey that is this album, you’ll realize that the length of this Epilogue is understandable within the nature of the album itself. All in all, this is a very interesting and well thought debut album for a band which mixes paganism and idealization of the nature of Blood and soil, and the violent nature of conflict.
Aryan Art “Harmony, Eternity, Universe” LP / CD
Darker Than Black records.
I must confess that even if I do have a couple of releases from this Bulgarian BM band, I’ve never put the attention they require to begin with. Perhaps that was because they do sound like an average BM band from the 90’s, or at least I remember them in such a way. But luckily I’ve received this new album, which of course re-awoke my interest again.
This is because this album, even if continues with the 90’s inspired black metal, it is infused with enormous amount of majestic and evocative melodies, which for some reason remind me to the Austrian Summoning. No, Aryan Art haven’t copied their style at all, they continue with their own, but the melodies bear certain resemblance to the Austrian duo, which is a really good combination. “Harmony…” sounds fresh, very inspired and enthusiastic in every possible way. And there is a medieval vibe of course running throughout the album. I recommend this whole heartedly.
Asgard/ Belzec / Lord Sanguinary / Warspirit / Black Lobo split cd
Eternal Warfare Prod.
And this is the second split cd in the series of Eternal Warfare Prod, this time featuring 5 Peruvian bands which, by some reason or another, fit into the warlike common theme of this release.
As I said on the previous review of the 1st split cd which also featured Asgard, this time it is an EP from 2016, in the same vein of the previous stuff, that is mid tempo melodic Pagan Metal influenced by Bathory Viking era, Morrigan and the likes, but with a more primitive stance and approach, clear vocals and nostalgic feel overall.
Belzec is a name quite well know within the Peruvian Black Metal circle, founded in 1998 but this is just a promo cd with 2 traks plus intros and outro, very much influenced by the 90’s Nordic Black Metal which was highly popular back then, the songs are well played and relevant up to this day.
Lord Sanguinary, as stated on the previous review, was a solo project prior to Asgard, here it was included the demo from 2004. Even if you can note why this project developed into what is now know as Asgard, there’s definitely a primitive Black metal in the vein of old Satyricon, mostly instrumental and definitely experimental, nice touch to have this project included on this release.
As for Warspirit, I’ve known this band as this demo has been also released as a 7”EP by Winter Solace records from the USA. Even if the band doesn’t offer anything substantially new, their brand of traditional black metal with a certain dose of melody is quite appealing and with an aura of nostalgia.
And lastly, Black Lobo originally was intended to be a punk sounding project / RAC, but on this recording they definitely wanted to do something different. They have included some WWII Marches and speeches having as a background some mid paced RAC, and no vocals at all. I don’t know if they have done this on purpose just for this release or if they will follow this direction on future releases. Anyway, this is an interesting way to close this split, as to me, their participation serves as a big outro. This cd comes with information about each project as well.
Asgard/Weisskrieg/Panzer Kommando/Black Terror 4 way split CD
Eternal Warfare Productions
This release is a rarity of its own because it is basically one of the first (if not the first) local cd split featuring south american bands with NS themes (although not necessarily and I’ll tell you why later on this review).
First of all, the Venezuelan / USA based band Weisskrieg come with an interesting take of RAC and NSBM with an interesting share of melodies and catchy songs, probably influenced by heavy metal bands as well, but keeping a RAC essence throughout all their 4 songs offered for this release.
Then, the Peruvian based solo project Asgard, featuring 3 tracks taken from an EP; this solo projects comes from the now gone Black Metal project called Lord Sanguinary. Here, with Asgard, the only member and composer wanted to do something different by mixing Pagan Metal elements influenced by Bathory’s Hammerheart Viking Era and RAC music. And that is basically. Clean and paused vocals which to my taste are their weak spot. Anyway these 3 tracks can be quite enjoyable if you like stuff like the above mentioned but with a more primitive take.
Next, here comes another Peruvian solo project: Black Terror. I remember their only demo which was released a few years ago which was poorly distributed. Well, they have included it here. But, strangely, as I said above, this project is not NS oriented and in such a way to my understanding it has no place on this split. It is basically a traditional, raw, primitive and with a terrible production Black Metal. Unlistenable to me, sorry. 3 long, long tracks which may seem an eternity to me to listen to, unfortunately. The weakest band of the whole split.
And closing this collaboration comes Panzer Kommando from Brazil, which basically is a RAC sounding band, no black metal , just ferocious and raw hardcore oriented band with Portuguese lyrics. This was their only release unfortunately.
Basically, this kind of 4 way splits may seem a good idea to know and listen to otherwise obscure and buried projects with poor distribution when they were released and in such a way it is pretty valid. The layout used for this cd is pretty well done as well.

Asgard “The Return of the Barbarians” CD
Self Released
A few time ago I got a recording from this one man project which was supposed to be just an EP, but this recording in fact is what would be their first album.
Well, to make things short and easy: Asgard is a local Viving Metal-one man- project. Yes, it may seems kind of weird but yes it is. Basically, the presented tracks consists of mid paced material influenced by Viking Era Bathory (well, without the choruses), newer Graveland and of course some RAC. The vocals are rather sung instead of screamed, and that’s precisely the weaker point of Asgard. Even if the songs themselves may be smart and kind of varied, even if at times primitive and minimalistic, the vocals do not contribute to their development and blossoming, on the contrary, they do sound dull and stagnating. On a couple of tracks, on the contrary, you’ll find some black metal vocals which make a difference to the presented tracks.
The production here is basic and primitive, but that’s sufficient for this kind of project. Here you will find nothing less than 10 tracks, including an intro and an outro. Basicall, I have liked Asgard, even if those vocals may seem at times to be an obstacle to the tracks themselves. This is limited to 300 copies so act fast.

Astriaal “Anatomy of the Infinite” CD
Obsidian Records.
It’s understandable why this album has been mixed by Knut Magne (Arcturus). Astriaal is an Australian Black metal band which has certain common elements with the Norwegians, at least during their early stages. This is their second album, and the first one that I manage to listen to. “Anatomy” is filled with melodic and so called “epic” passages which make the whole recording an interesting experience. The problem (is there’s one of course) would be that there are a few “short songs” (or as I’d like to call them- interludes) between the ACTUAL songs whose purpose seem to be more like fillers than songs...therefore I’d dare to describe “Anatomy...” as a mini album. But yes, overall the quality of the compositions is above average when it comes to structures and the use of melody and solemn moments...give it a try if you can...

Auschwitz Symphony Orchestra “History will repeat itself” CD
No sign of life prod.
This compilation re-unites the first three releases from this band, being their debut demo “Sonderbehandlung”, their debut album “Fuck their European Union” and the second demo called “National Socialist Order”, plus a bunch of covers of Mistreat and Motorhead recorded as bonus. Ok, to the point: ASO plays some grind core which sounds very influenced by Napalm Death’s FETO basically, yes, some songs do sound pretty much influenced by Hardcore, the distorted bass and whatnot. Of course, being this band pretty much NS oriented, then the Nationalistic and anti EU intros are present as well.
Here You’ll find nothing less than 98 tracks, some of them being pretty short, of just a few seconds.
I don’t really know if squeezing all three releases into just one cd is good idea, ok the cd is full but honestly I can’t listen this in a row, as it tends to be pretty repetitive, but listening this in small doses is the way to go at least to me. The songs are very violent, catchy and pretty well done even if I do recognize a few riffs from ND’s FETO in a few tracks.
Also, being this release basically an ideological driven band, they should have included more lyrics, and not just a few. But honestly, I hve been pretty much surprised to found out a band with these characteristics from Finland.

Avaris “Doctrine of Awakening” LP/CD
Breath of Pestilence
This is the debut album after a small taste of the material which came out as a rehearsal tape featuring 2 tracks plus intro and outro.
What can I say about Avaris being formed in a scene as prolific and varied as it is the Greek Black Metal scene? How could any band still carry the old and traditional sound and still sound new and refreshed?
What Avaris shows throughout this album is what I would call “the reawakening of a dormant Atavism”, an awakening of the old in order to sculpt what’s to come, individually as well as collectively. Also, I must say that this traditional Hellenic sounding Black Metal is soaked in a nostalgic feel which only serves to enhance the purpose and atmosphere of the whole album. This, summed to lyrics glorifying a long a distant past and myths which serve as a call to remembrance of the old and renouncing of the rotten new status quo, denouncing it for what it has become. This album also come with the inclusion of a manifesto which very explain what they are trying to do. I like the idea of having translated the whole text into several languages, they very well could have left it written in English, but by doing it that way then it wouldn’t be that personal and wouldn’t touch in the same way as if written in a personal language.
Anyway, Avaris not only portray a traditional sound but also a return to traditionalism in a whole artistic presentation. Well done.
Azaxul “the Saints Impaled” CD
Misanthropia Discos
Azaxul, in case you don’t know yet, is a band which arose from the ashes of the German Black Metal Cult Moonblood. Even if has been formed during the late 90’s, they are able to record, after a couple of demos, their debut album almost 20 years later. But the band didn’t want us to wait a bunch of years for their second album. Therefore this album, The Saints Impaled is released. And with this album, Azaxul clearly shows their link with their past called Moonblood. And that is because they have included only two new tracks, and the rest, 6 out of 8 tracks are Moonblood songs which have been re-recorded properly for this release, because these songs were presented originally as rehearsals or were just unfinished at that point.
So basically, this is not only a new Azaxul album but also a link to their past. And those interested in Moonblood, will just adore this release, as it clearly follows the path of 90’s black metal with Majestic and dark melodies by which Moonblood is known for. The lyrics are just as well written as always, well detailed and describing memories of an old past whose links to the dark are well established and still alive for those who want to search for them.
Barshasketh “Sitra Achra” CD
Todestrieb Records.
Ok, this is the second album and released during 2013, before signing with the German label Blut and Eisen. And yes, this is the main band of the man behind the solo project Belliciste. Therefore, this band comes originally from New Zealand but it has been relocated to Europe afterwards.
And yes, after listening to Belliciste I can totally relate the main similitudes between that project and this band. It is also melodic, very tremolo oriented and influenced by the likes of Satanic Warmaster, and I did even listen to a borrowed riff from Deathspell Omega’s Si Monumentum… somewhere on this record.
This is traditional black metal which could have been easily released during the 90’s without doubt. Those who enjoy their Black metal with a high dose of Melody, while being dark and sinister, then this band should be for you.
Baxaxaxa “Catacomb Cult” LP/CD
Sinister Flame recs.
If you have heard about the early german Black metal scene with names such as Fulgor and Ungod, then it’s most likely that you’ve heard about Baxaxaxa as well. As a matter of fact this project shares some members with Ungod and some other bands.
The question is, what actually happens when a band release some material and after many years return with a “comeback”? Most of them do it for whatever reasons except for the Art itself. Baxaxaxa’s return not only offer continuity to their already established foundation, but also a reinforcement of attitude and form in a time where the foundations of black metal have been distorted and distanced from the original intentions. Baxaxaxa have returned with a debut after revisiting and reinforcing the foundations of archaic black metal without paying attention to the constant distortions that the genre has going through the recent years. In such a way, Catacomb Cult is not only a continuation in form of what was established with their demo more than 25 years ago, but a reminder of what black metal is and represents. And while Ungod was about aggression, Baxaxaxa is focused upon atmosphere and that’s precisely what attracted my attention. Heavily rooted in Ancient glories like Samael and even Mortuary Drape, the band have managed to craft their own and unique sound rooted in the ancient, primordial and necromantic atmospheres of, indeed a Cult dwelling among forgotten Catacombs. They are not another band revisiting the past, they belong to the past and through the remembrance of this past, they teach and guide.
Baxaxaxa “De Vermis Mysteriis” LP/CD
Sinister Flame recs.
Their debut album “Catacomb Cult” was enough to introduce their Art to new audiences and to make old listeners remember that they were always lurking in the dark, cooking new necromancies.
“De Vermis Mysteriis” offers this, and something else. They have developed the statements set on their previous album, but noticeably improved. Here, on this album, they have expanded and refined what they had set in motion. And perfected it. One thing remains certain: Baxaxaxa have revived the necromantic atmosphere of archaic Black Metal of the 90’s and adorned it not only with the aesthetics in Art and image of that time, but also they have infused it with lyrics which also follow the same traditional patterns already present in the printed booklet and music, but also those lyrics offer something else. A Black Metal band which doesn’t offers mystery and intrigue within their own concept, is a band which can’t offer much. This mystery makes the listener to delve into their songs, study their art and lyrics and listen carefully what they have prepared to the listener, and discover that which is hidden. That was the old feeling I had when listening to an old record of Bathory, Samael, Mortuary Drape, etc for the first time, and if a band manage to achieve this, then they have succeeded.
Baxaxaxa’s music also shows a notable development. Basically follows the same lineaments already shown on previous outputs, but they are discovering how to take advantage of that sound, infuse their music with the eerie keyboards and catchy elements in order to build an improved atmosphere. I’m still thinking that rawer vocals would have worked better for them, as I thought when listened to Venom and Slayer for the first time, but that’s a personal taste.
All in all, if you had listened to “Catacomb Cult”, and may think that they don’t have much room to develop their own Art, then you may think twice because this is one step ahead. From time to time a band teaching and leading the proper way to Archaic and immovable black metal is needed. Baxaxaxa are leading the way through the catacombs and the rottenness of the old graves, let everybody remember what black metal is supposed to be.
Behemoth “The Satanist” DLP/CD+DVD
Nuclear Blast records.
Ah, Behemoth...it used to be a personal favourite until they became too ”accessible”, polished and equally boring and repetitive, exploiting the sound and aesthetics developed to the higher point with the “Zos Kia Kultus” album. Then, I lost trace of the band. They simply weren’t able to reach that achievement again. Not even they got close. After a long time I realised they were still there, and after a few years they would return on Nuclear Blast records. If you ask me, nothing to cheer nor celebrate.
Oh well, why not, I would give them a chance again. Ok, the Satanist is not a bad album. In fact it is pretty good, and this fact is because they have taken influences from outside the genre, turning this album into a mixture of death metal and hard rock. And yes, the songs have a lot of studio arrangements and a variety of contributions which would be very hard to replicate on stage. And I do think, they are using playback when playing live. But I won’t discuss that fact here, but the album alone.
The Satanist is very varied and unpredictable. Songs like “ora pro nobis Lucifer”, “Blow your trumpets Gabriel”, the title track and the closing epic “O Father O Satan O Sun” show the interest of the band for innovation originality.
Lyrically they have kept the same formula, by commenting each song and at the same time showing the sincerity that I thought they were losing with every new release. I won’t discuss every song nor lyric here, but once you have studied them, then you’ll KNOW. The cd comes with a DVD featuring a complete pro-shot show. And Dennis Forkas is still doing beautiful and dark renditions...
Beherit “At the Devil’s Studio” LP / CD / cass.
Kult / Hells Headbangers.
Ok, probably you have heard from this release so I’ll be short here: This new offering has been advertised like the “lost” Beherit’s debut album. I don’t think that this bands needs this kind of promotion whatsoever because it has a well earned name in the Unerground. “At the Devil’s Studio”, at least for me, it’s nothing less than a forgotten rehearsal recorded during 1990, simply because it shares the same elements also present on their early cassettes. For this release, they just have increased the sound of the original tape (you can hear the ever present zzzzzzz of the original tape!) and nothing else. No new artwork, or even photos, or whatever. Oh well, perhaps the band don’t care too much except for the fact that finally they’ve been able to release this.
Anyway, those into the old Beherit sound will dig this, myself included. You already know the songs except that these versions are slightly different from the originals, but then again it’s not a big surprise since Beherit haven’t been that prolific when playing their songs. Get it while you can.
Belphegor “Conjuration of the Dead” LP/CD
Nuclear Blast records.
Belphegor have changed with the years. And changing is not necessarily a bad word. That is, until they don’t change anymore, but they choose to copy themselves over and over again. From my point of view, I have enjoyed the band even if they have become a parody of themselves. Therefore, I’m still getting their albums. But, to a certain extent, how is for a band to release the same album, with the same overcharged artwork, the same gas masks and using models over and over? Well, I have been able to live with that so far. Conjuration of the dead is not a bad album, even if the same elements are present again. Helmuth is still able to compose good riffs here and there, and varied songs so you’ll be able to get through the whole album easily. But the problem here is that the lyrical aspect has been left aside. I don’t have any idea why the main composer is letting his groupies, models or whatever , write the lyrics. The result is disastrous. It turns Belphegor into a plastic act. The truly blasphemous nature of the old albums is certainly gone. Buy only if you’re a die hard fan.
Belphegor “Totenritual” LP/CD
Nuclear Blast recs
There is one thing certain about Belphegor: they have been doing the same album over and over again, fearing that some kind of artistic freedom could end their well earned name within the black death metal scene throughout these years. That, or perhaps they just wanted to repeat the same formula which has succeeded over and over again until there’s no more room for the band and their audience finally give up. In such a way, is this album a success? Well, partially I’d say. Taking a look at that heavily photoshopped cover art, I would say that indeed Totenritul is more of the same. But, is it really? Yes, and no. Besides the cover art, the band continue doing what they know best: playing black death metal with big riffs and melodies here and there, even if this time they have opted for the death metal vocals primarily and their musical approach is more death metal this time. The songs, even if they do not offer great things to those acquainted with the band, at least are well composed, played and executed. Well, at least in the lyrical department they have added a few elements which were absent on previous releases, and they finally got rid of those horrible pseudo erotic lyrics which introduced those gothic models in order to gain at least some attention for their lack of new ideas. So, in this sense, the band at least are doing something new. This is better than their last couple of albums.
Behexen “My soul for his Glory” LP/CD
Hammer of Hate records.
Another album from the Finish Satan Worshippers of Behexen, which are very well known for their brutality and fastness of their compositions. On this album I can hear a more controlled side, as they have kept the speed, but giving space to more catchy passages, touching the death metal field from time to time. They have also included some chants which fits the solemn and obscure nature of the songs very well. The lyrics remain very simplistic for a band which has released many albums. Oh well...this effort is strong by any means and if you liked the old Behexen this one should not disappoint you.

Belliciste “Sceadugenga” CD
Todestrieb records.
This is the debut album from this one man project coming originally from New Zealand, but relocated to Scotland and Slovakia afterwards.
Honestly, this is the first time that I listen to this project, which is by the way , rather new, as this debut album was released a couple of years ago.
Ok, the lyrics haven’t been enclosed here, so I’ll comment about the music exclusively, which seems to be very much influenced by Finnish black metal acts such as Satanic Warmaster, as the riffs are built upon lots of melodies and harmonics. Ok to be honest this album is not original in the sense that their melodic style have has been already done, but at least the man behind this project is clever enough to follow the path with creativity in the already trodden path.
The songs are well composed and well played, and all in all this is a petty interesting album.
Bexehen / Satanic Warmaster split 10’LP / CD
Hammer of Hate recs.
This release is something special in the sense that Behexen does present a sound not found on previous recordings, this time being even more melodic and at the same time dark, these songs reek of Finnish unique sound. For the side of Satanic Warmaster, Werwolf offers a brand new track plus an accoustic version of “The burning eyes of werewolf”, which is something strange to listen to, anyway good.

Bilskirnir “Wotan Redivivus” LP / CD
Darker than Black prod.
So, if you have managed to grab a copy of Psicoterror issue 9th, then you should already know about this one man Black Metal project from Germany. If not, well, I did an extensive interview with the man in that issue, and reviewed the previous album “Wotansvolk”. Well, after nothing less than 6 years, we finally have the follow up album. Basically, Wotan Redivivus continues where Wotansvolk left. Well, there are a few differences though. First of all, Widar has chosen to do this album basically in a mid tempo, and continuing the huge Burzum / Katatonia “brave murder day” era, but this time the songs are catchier and even more “folkish” than on previous albums. Well, this is due perhaps the lyrical concept exposed in this album, and that would be understandable. This album was supposed to include some vocals done by nothing less than Mr. Taylor from the neo-folk project “Changes”. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen, but anyway, all the interesting elements present on previous albums are also present here: catchiness, memorable melodies and nostalgic / atavistic lyrics.
Bilskirnir “In Solitary Silence” LP/CD
Darker than black records.
Well, after nothing less than 5 years after having released their latest album “Wotan Redivivus”, this one man project is able to release this mini album, which as a matter of fact, is not a new recording at all, but an old recording “being in the making for at least 15 years” according to Widar. But, well, he managed to put everything together after many years and then release in the way it was meant to be.
Anyone familiar with Bilskirnir, will be aquatinted with the sound and the heavy influences taken from old Burzum and Katatonia “Brave Murder Day” era. Well, this EP was mostly influenced by Burzum’s “Hvis Lyset tar oss”, and after listening to it you’ll know why. Here you’ll find five tracks, one of them being an intro the last one being a long synth ambience track, also in the spirit of early Burzum, that is, cyclic, hypnotic and repetitive. I know that with time, Bilskirnir managed to develop a sound of its own despite of the obvious influence, but, being this particular recording something older, then the influences are more obvious. Songs are great, though, and without doubt this is a good addition to this project’s discography.
Black Prophecies “Descent into Hell” CD
Terror from Hell records
Some years ago it was a novelty to resurrect old and obscure bands, even if they didn’t deserve it, just for the sake of being “old” and therefore “influential”.
Yes, this Italian label is doing the same with Black Prophecies, which was a band that released during their short existence a couple of demos (from 88 and 91) and a couple of rehearsals which contained songs to appear on their debut album, supposedly to be released by the rip off label “Wild Rags”. However, this never happened.
I was especially curious about this compilation as I had published a short interview with this band on the first Psicoterror. I was contacted by this label as well, as they wanted a copy of that interview in order to include it for the vinyl version, which hasn’t been released yet, and I never received an answer from them I must add!
During all these years, I didn’t remember how this band sounded at all so I picked up a copy.
Black Prophecies, despite of having released only 2 demos, of being primitive and amateurish, possessed the same influences which gave shape to one of my favourite acts ever: Samael. That is, Bathory and Hellhammer mainly.
But, B.P. took those influences in a particular way, creating a sound of their own, it makes me remember to the Samael demo in a twisted way. So, all in all, is this release another old “resurrection” for the naive young listeners who consider everything old as “cult”??
Perhaps, but this time the label was right! Old people: buy this and remember how sincere bands sounded back then!
Young people: buy it and learn how music sounded pure and raw back then!!!
Black September / Ravenlord Darkstorm split CD
The Ritual Productions.
From one side, Black September is a solo project which comes from The Netherlands, and whose tracks were recorded between the years 2000 and 2007, and that fact is completely understandable because the songs vary between militant / traditional Black metal and even early Cradle of filth(!) in the riffing. The songs are quite interesting and well played, perhaps because of the fact that they’re that varied.
Now, for the side of ravenlord Darkstorm, this band seem to have recorded these songs as a tribute to the epic side of Bathory, but , to be honest, the songs themselves, even the choruses, aren’t near the majestic performance of Bathory. They sound uninspired and poorly structured. Anyway, if you want to check this split out, write to:
Blood Axis “Born Again” Digi CD
Tesco / Storm Prod.
It’s not so difficult to figure out why the album was named Born Again. This is a completely reborn Blood Axis, in form but in essence they remain the same band I discovered more than 10 years ago. They just have left behind all those samples which were omniprescent in the “Gospel...”, giving place entirely to neo-folk and psychedelic rock. Not bad at all, it’s just that those who have enjoyed inmensely their debut will find this album quite strange in comparison. Blood Axis continues to be a “cultural construction”, and their lyrics cover a vast number of topics and contributors, but they are all ONE, just as the music itself. The presentation and layout is very well done, and I’d have to say that I didn’t expect less from them. Great album.

Blood Axis “Ultimacy” CD
Tesco Distro.
Ultimacy was supposed to be the title of the second Blood Axis álbum but it turned out to be a compilation of every song released by the band on compilations and 7’eps, which, of course, are long gone now. Now, I do have mixed feelings about this one, though. This compilation was done in reverse chronological order, and this means, that the folk inspired songs come first, while the industrial influenced songs appear at the bottom of the list.
You know, while this compilation re-unites the entire song collection from the band, I’d say that some versions do not make justice to the renditions appeared on their live album “Blot”. Specifically I mean the songs “Electricity”, “Lord of the Ages” and “The hangman and the Papist”. As for “the march of Brian Boru”, the version presented here in comes with an industrial introduction, strange sounding but it shows the perfect balance between folk music and industrial elements which were very present on their early stage. As for the rest of the track list, each and every song is a unique representation of a band which remains as an active force of counterculture against this modern world. This release comes in a discrete looking envelope.
Blood Libel “Museums of Gas and Mirrors” LP/CD
IG Farben / Lower Silesian Stronghold
This is an interesting project featuring bandmember(s) of the Canadian Black Metal band Svolver. Having a couple of demos out plus a compilation on tape and cd, finally this project managed to release a proper album. So, well, everybody who have listened to Svolder and their particular preference towards the original riffing of Grand Belial’s key as a primary influence, will know the stages of development that Svolver have crossed, and will know how they have managed to develop their own sound. With this particular project, they have refined even more the process, creating distinguished sounding riffs which maintain those tangible influences, but at the same time existing with their own merits. As for the lyrical perspective, we should establish parallels also with Svolder. While the latter are focused mostly in the current conditions of the West in terms of socio political perspectives, Blood libel deal mostly with Holocaust revisionism and everything that this entails as seen from a particular political perspective. The LP also contains texts and photos of Concentration Camps with texts which can only be seen as Historical Revisionism and anyone who have read these kind of texts before will know what I’m talking about. Perhaps this one has passed under the noses of many, but it shouldn’t.
Burzum “Fallen” LP / CD
Byelobog prod. / Candlelight rec.
Unexpectedly, this new album came out fast. Although considering the fact that Burzum had always released albums within a short period of time in-between, this shouldn´t be a surprise after all.
Fallen is a very clear sounding album, it was done on purpose and, although the previous “Belus” was a unit and felt in that way, this one is not, and lyrically it could be “tied” to Belus at some extent, at least generally even if the lyrics are more personal this time. Musically, even if it follows some parameters exposed by Belus (well it’s Burzum anyway), this time, and as described by Varg himself, it’s more dynamic, perhaps more melodic and with way more clean vocals than Belus. I dont know if this fact will mean a transition for future releases, but these elements fit well into the nature of the songs themselves. Varg knows how to lead the listener into the correct moods established for every song and this fact has always been the trademark of every Burzum release.
Despite being almost 50 minutes long, the album feels kind of short, but it’s highly rewarding.
Burzum “Umskiptar” 2lp/CD
Byelobog prod.
Those who have expected this album to be like a new continuation from the previous one were very wrong because Umskiptar doesn’t sound like anything in particular at all. Probably to the Burzum fans out there Umskiptar may sound like a weak attempt of creating a new album as the songs are not as prolific as previous stuff and this time they’re pretty repetitive as well. This has an explanation. First of all as this album is a concept album, Varg has chosen to tell the story in an specific way, an almost mantric way and this has a name although just can’t remember it right now.
The old song elven dance makes a suitable appearance as well, and I’d say that the first part of the album is more “violent” and the rest more atmospheric, mantric like and meditative. This is in no way a bad album at all, it’s just different and have to take into consideration the nature of the concept.
Cadaver Incubador “Incubador de Enfermedades” Comp. CD
Necronausea records.
Ok, this band was born in 1994 in Lima- Peru, and has always been a Grind Death noise band. Even if they have released a full length album in the year 2007, their previous demo tapes were well known back then, at least in the Grind noise scene. This release compiles their first 2 demos: “Te llego el olor de muerte” released in 1996 and “Llegando a la colonia de Enfermedades”, released in 1999. On both demos, Toñyn Destructor from the legendary Hadez and well known Anal Vomit plays on drums, just in case.
Ok, to the point now: their first demo sounds very raw and at certain parts (most parts I’d say), it is unintelligible to say the least. Does this matter? For the desired effect of being a Grind Death noise band with ugly sound, ugly lyrics and overall disgusting themes, this fits quite well.
On the contrary, the second demo presented here was recorded on a pro-studio and the end result is completely different, I don’t know if this was intended originally or not. Anyway, this demo has got a clear sound and everything is quite hearable and distinguishable. Does this matter? Yes. Even if the band was born and supposed to sound ugly and being disgusting overall, it doesn’t have the same effect on the listener as the previous demo. The riffing is ugly, but at least is original. The lyrics are ugly too, and naïve and somehow hilarious if that can be added to the whole listening effect, desired or not. There are people who enjoys this ugliness and filth, this is not my coup of tea but anyway. This is a piece of history of the local Death grind Noise scene and both demos are quite unreachable and out of print for some time now, this is your chance to get them both.

Caladan Brood “Echoes of Battle” 2LP / CD
Northern silence prod.
This band or project is something really strange and unique on its own in the sense that they haven’t released any demo or promo before the release of this album. And all of a sudden, they appear with this deluxe looking album and it’s not so hard to understand what happened through the minds of Northern Silence prod. First of all, Caladan Brood is a band heavily influenced by Summoning, and certainly could be misunderstood as Summoning clones if judged superficially. They are not. And certainly, this is the first band with that influence which can actually compose something worthy and well done. Unlike Summoning, these songs offer a considerable ammount of variety which makes you pay attention to every detail. It’s just that the songs are carefully written, and both musicians are proficient enough to be named just as “Summoning fans”. Basically the songs do sound heavily inspired by Summoning but they also possess unique attributes.
The vinyl edtion comes with 2 summoning covers taken from Minas Morgul and I’d definitedly recommend this format. They have taken their time in order to develop these songs and it shows. Not a second rate Summoning clone.
Campo de Mayo / Permafrost split CD
Dark Hidden Prod.
At last I can listen to a new Campo de Mayo recording. Together with Permafrost, this one man project has established a unique form of playing Black Metal, mainly linear in form and with not so many changes, but with original and at the same time aggressive riffing. The same can be said about Permafrost, which is another project of the same member. However E. has managed to print an exclusive touch which is more focused in acoustic melodies and atmospheric arrangements.
Both bands deserve recognition for what they are and represent, not only in terms of music but also as ideological entities.

Casket / Pudridero / Perras Malditas / Ethereal forms 4 way split cd
Necronausea records.
This is another interesting 4 way split indeed, and coming not from random bands, but from bands which are linked in one way or another because they share some common members, or some members share another common projects. Well, at least when speaking about the Venezuelan bands included in here.
Let’s start with the Venezuelan Casket. It is a young band formed in 2021 but formed by veterans coming from other bands. They offer here 7 tracks including an Extreme Noise Terror cover, quite strange choice for a band of this nature, but anyway. They play a pretty much technical form of old school death metal, not focused on speed and blast beats, but on rhythm and good riffing. They do a good job indeed.
Then it comes Pudridero, This one is also a young band formed in 2020, in San Jose, Costa Rica. They are not necessarily a death metal band, because they have a high dose of thrash metal, with crazy technical solos, blast beats, double vocals, and they offer a pretty technical and professional job here. No complaints at all. Here it is included their debut EP, with 4 tracks.
Now it comes the Venezuelan band “Perras Malditas” (Cursed Bitches in English, what a name for a death metal band hahah). This was supposed to be an all female death metal band, but that wasn’t possible and the only female involved in the band hired some band members coming from other local bands and recorded this only demo, back in the year 2002, being this recording the oldest of the 4 presented on this 4 way split. What can I say about this band? It is some fairly well done and played old school death metal with odd vocals especially coming from a girl. Good rhythm basis and crazy solos as well. They should have continued but well…
And at last, comes Ethereal Forms, another band from Venezuela, but this project is different from the rest of the bands presented here. They sound much more polished, the recording features a more professional production, and the music shows a melodic death metal influenced by Swedish bands, I can even notice hints and bits of Dissection and whatnot. Their solos and guitar work is impressive and these guys should continue because they are very good at it although their current state is uncertain. Here they have included their debut EP, which is their only recording so far I think.
All in all, this split is good indeed, and Necronausea is doing a good job unburying rare and obscure acts which had not the best promotion when they were originally released. Get this 4 way split.
Changes « Lament » CD
Hau-Ruck ! Prod.
This is an special album indeed because of the way it has been arranged, with elements never presented before, and the personal situations which led both members actually to compose and release “Lament” as a whole and conceptual album.
Robert Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk went through divorces recently, and as a result this album was created, with new songs but also amazing new renditions of old tunes such as “Memorabilia”, “Sweet Eve” and “The Saddest Thing”. Also, they have added the recitation of poems to every song. This album counts with the participation of several musicians, among them are the Austrian Der Blutharsch , with their rendition of “Mountains of Sorrow”. In case you still don’t know about this band, they have been plaing neo-folk music for more than 30 years now, I’ve published an interview with them a couple of issues before, and I’d suggest you to check them out.

Chaos Invocation Part One «In Bloodline with the Snake » CD
World Terror Comitee.
This is the debut of a young German band which follows the path of the so called “Orthodox Black Metal”, that is to say, it has been strongly influenced by bands such as Glorior Belli and Watain so you should know what to expect here. The lyrics, to my eyes are simply a rehash of what has been done in that field, covered again and again. But I’d say go for the music instead. Even if the band has some obvious influences, they managed to compose their prayers and hymns without being that predictable and with a technical level above average. Indeed, some of the presented songs here are really chaotic, melodic and caustic, so to speak. They indeed have some interesting elements to show and you should check this album.

Contumacy “Reverence of Putrefaction” CD
Necronausea records.
Ok, this is not a new recording whatsoever, but a compilation of everything that this old school death metal band from Peru have recorded so far.
In case you still don’t know, Contumacy was born during 1990 with the intention of playing old school death metal in the vein of Funebre (FIN) and Abhorrence (pre- Amorphis). If they have succeeded or not, well it’s up to you to decide after listening to this. However, I’d say that Contumacy have tried to maintain these influences alive throughout their releases.
This cd is composed of 4 demos basically. This first one, recorded during 1990 shows a band that still struggles to settle down the influences they claim to possess. It has been recorded with the technical limitations of the time but you’ll have a good idea as to what to expect from the band.
On the second demo, released during 1992, the band continues to follow the same path established on their debut demo, that is, primitive sounding death metal with low ranged vocals.
After that, the band entered a recess of more than 20 years in order to work again together, with a different line up. Therefore, a third demo has been released during 2014, this time with a much better budget. This third demo/reh is basically the re-recording of the debut demo, with better production and clearly better musicianship. The same goes for the 4th and last demo (so far). It is with this new line up that the band became more confortable with their sound and their style of playing death metal. If you have missed any of these recordings in their original format, then you should go for this.

Cultes des Ghoules “Henbane” DLP / CD
Garazel prod. / Hells Headbangers.
This band has unleashed some kind of a justified hype due to their last couple of releases, their previous album Haxan and now this one. And that’s understandable. This band doesn’t sound like any other band. But that’s not a positive point either. Because CDG’s compositions aren’t oustanding, but pretty primitive, and I’d say, uninspired. But then, what element does make CDG’s music appealing?. See, when they released Haxan, I couldn’t stand listening to the whole album in a row. It had its moments but overall it was pretty dull and uninteresting. But, they started to cover their composition with interesting elements, original vocals, samples and what not. Now, with Henbane, they have mastered their arrangements. Their music continues to be uninspired and equally primitive for the most part but this time they have managed to keep my interest throughout the whole record. The vocals are something very well done and executed and turn the album into an interesting experience. That, and of course their strangely written lyrics, exalting the medieval witchcraft and giving the overall album and strange and unique atmosphere. And that is something tht not bany bands are capable to do nowadays.
Cultes des Ghoules”Coven” 2cd/3LP
Garazel/Hells Headbangers
After Hembane, which, to my own taste was way better than the previous “Haxan”, now Cultes des Ghoules releases this new album, which in fact it is a very long album and for a reason. Coven is a concept album, and all the 5 very long songs are related to the main concept and history, which is delivered in the form of a script and exclusively through the dialogue of the characters created for that purpose. Coven, reveals the rebirth with an unexpected ending of a young girls awakened through the art of witchcraft and medieval devil- worship.
Ok, musically, CDG offers their traditional way of writing a primitive succession of well inspired riffs, perhaps with a little too much repetition in some cases, but fortunately this repetitions doesn’t spoils the natural flowing of the album. If you have listened this band beforehand, you’ll know what to expect in this department.
But everything revolves around the lyrical department, or at least it should be in this way. This album is very long. Almost 90 min longs, and therefore should be enough to develop the presented story in a proper an extended way. Unfortunately they haven’t done that, but they have limited the telling of the tale through mere dialogues between the participants, which will give you hints about what’s going on. At least, they should have included additional texts on the booklet. This would give the listener a much better picture of everything. This album is not only a riff fest, but also a story made music. And they should demonstrate this in a proper way.
Cultes des Ghoules “Sinister, or treading the darker paths” CD / 2lp
Hells Headbanger records, Under the Sign of Garazel prod.
And this one is yet another installment within the cycle of chapters dedicated to the cult of the Devil. When I first listened to this band, I knew that musicianship was behind the construction of atmospheres and the telling of stories, and I understood that this is what the band is all about.
Of course, since the release of Haxan there has been some sort f evolution, they have succeeding in their primary task, being the bizarre Henbane the top of their offerings, at least to my own taste. With this album, they have opted for a shorter approach. Cove was just huge, they don’t need to repeat themselves in order to achieve similar results. Although this time, the band have paid a bigger attention to the riffing and the arrangements of the tracks. There is a lot going on here, the songs develop themselves pretty naturally and in the process they do accompany the telling of this Sinister Tale of Devil Worship. AS for the vocals, they have always been some sort of unique experience, with this album they even develop more and more, changing shape and mutating as the story unfolds. From the monotonous and mood setting first track to the brilliance of sinister shining of the later tracks, Cultes des Ghoules has proven once again their versatility of singing medieval songs to the Devil and make them unique with every release.
Curriculum Mortis “Demo II” CD
Espiritus Inmundos / Consigna records
Ok, where do I begin with this one? I remember having received a copy of this recording back in the early 1990 or so through a friend of mine who shared high school with me and was a tape trader buddy. He got a copy of this demo even before it was officially released and was kind enough to dub a copy for me. At that time it was really unconceivable how this demo hadn’t been released officially at that point because it was incredibly good. It was innovative, smart, well played and touched sonic territories that no local band dared to touch. In such a way this local band was one the best, if not the best, thrashcore metal band from Lima-Peru. With this demo simply entitled “II” or “Demo 1989”, the band explored sounds unconceivable back then and which gave them a lot of hassle by the close mindedness of the local scene. They even started experimenting with the English language on their lyrics. If their previous demo was simply put a raw and straight display of thrashcore, on this new demo they made a more melodic, technical and adventurous voyage through different influences, being the most notorious the folkish “Hamelin” and some other surprises which you should discover yourself.
This new edition comes heavily illustrated and with several bonus tracks, rehearsals, liveshows and whatnot. This is a piece of Peruvian 80’s Metal, and one the best out there for sure.

Dagon “In Desolationem Per Nefandum” CD
Fire Of Fire Recs.
This is the second album offered by this young North American BM band. The album is composed basically by five long hymns influenced by Hermetism and a long ending ritual, which is basically a nine minutes ritual/ambient track.
Their Black metal is mostly composed by mid tempo songs with occasional outburst of ferocity, but it’s mostly meditative and, I’d dare to say, hypnotic per se. These songs are graced by a few truly exceptional riffs which kept my attention throughout the album.
Please note that this is a young band, and I’m sure that they have much more to offer in the future.
Dark Fury(Pol) / Evil(Bra) / Pagan Hellfire(can)
“We know how to hate” 3 way split.
Hammer of Damnation prods.
Excellent 3 way split which I bought mainly because of Dark Fury and Evil mainly, cause I didn’t manage to listen to the canadian Pagan Hellfire before.
Even if I only knew of Dark Fury from early recordings, i must say that this new material surprised me a lot because the band has aevolved a lot in terms of songwriting since their debut, which was very raw and incipient. Their style continues to be aggressive NS war metal but this time they have polished a lot their songs and added a new perspective to them.
As for the Brazilian Evil, they have always been identified with a more primitive kind of traditional black metal and was mainly a project of Warlord, but now it seems that the band has a complete line up. Evil also developed a lot their songwriting which is much more complex now without being too polished and the songs remain extremely catchy as they used to be. Although I can’t understand yet their “departure” of certain ideological fields as their lyrics are pretty similar in shape and meaning as their older stufff.
Ok, as for Pagan Hellfire, glad I managed to listen to it finally. Long songs, obvious Burzum influences but all in all, it’s not a mere clone like others but tthe riffs were very well developed and composed and I’d say that this is one of the few Burzum influenced bands nowadays that are interesting enough to listen to.
There’s a lot variety on this cd and you should definitedly get a copy.
Dead Congregation “Graves of the Archangels” LP/CD
Nuclear War Now.
Lately there has been a hype surrounding this band, better said, the release of this debut album. Dead Congregation, is a Greek Death Metal band which has a lot influences of early Incantation (era Onward to Golgota). They are not a copycat, though. Their musicianship is quite remarkable in the sense that they’ve managed to combine the brutality and technicque of Death Metal with a very personal occult approach, not only in terms of music, arrangements (those chants included are just amazing and fit very well in the occult atmosphere created), artwork and lyrics, making this album cohesive and not just flat, as many of the current DM releases.
A remarkable piece of Occult Death Metal for sure.
Deathchain “Ritual Death Metal” LP/ CD
Svart Records.
Ritual Death metal. Appropriate title for an album paying tribute to the old school metal of death, this time pretty much influenced by the classic Morbid Angel and to a lesser extent by old Entombed, spiced by melodic sections/riffing here and there.
This band is not new. From the ashes of Demilich (Fin), the main composer Mr. Corpse decided to form this entity, which has released nothing less than 6 albums!. Yeah, I did know the band by name but wasn’t interested in their music even if I listened a couple of tracks years ago. So, this is the first album which hooks me from start to finish, due to their approach to old sounding death metal. I believe that this metamorphosis began with their previous work called “Death Gods”, which was also focused lyrically into the splendour of the Sumerian Pantheon.
This album was recorded in the well known Necromorbus studios and the productions is clear and powerful. If you haven’t listened to this band before, i’d suggest you to start with this piece of ritual death metal.
Decomposed Flesh of Humanity”Apology of a Depraved Society” CD
A Sangre Fria records.
This is a local band formed in the year 2009 but for some reason they have released this debut album during 2023.
Anyway, to the point then: And I’m going to be very honest here; I’m not fond of Brutal Death Metal, it is just not my thing. I have never been able to enjoy an already undecipherable wall of sound with corny and pig like vocals, cheesy lyrics and what not. However, what I have to say about this band is that they have actually taken care in the production of this album and for the first time I’m able to discern what’s going in the background with the different instruments, guitars and especially the drums which sound crystal clear and very distinguishable. Even if the album is pretty short, I’m starting to enjoy the tightness of this band and the conjunction between the drumming and the guitar work. Still I find annoying the vocals but that’s what this particular style has to offer. Lyrical wise, well it is nothing new, pretty basic and disgusting stuff, and I think that the band needs to do no further effort about that.
I think that this kind of music works in small doses and this short album could do the trick here. If it weren’t for the punchier production (courtesy of a Broken Hope band member nothing less) and tightness of the band probably I wouldn’t pay too much attention to this in the first place, but, if brutal death metal is your thing, then this band could interesting enough for you to take a close listen to.

Deluge “Aether” CD
Les Acteurs De L’ombre prod.
This is the debut álbum of this French band whose music is self defined as Black Metal /post hardcore although I have not the slightest idea what this means to begin with, but to my ears, they do sound like another progressive act with Black metal Influences. And believe me, I have had a hard time trying to undertand and digest this album. First of all, the lyrics aren’t included and there’s virtually no information or clue about what the band are they trying to do with this album. All I can say is, it seems that Deluge is focused upon the atmosphere they are trying to build with this album. From thunderous and very fast sections with atonal riffs, to calmer sections alternated with calmer passages featuring acoustic guitars with soft rain and a distant storm behind. And this formula does work, at least for a while. The point is that Deluge’s music lacks perspective, as their album plays on and continues its development, I’m not very sre what they’re trying to accomplish with it. Perhaps that’s not important? Idon’t know, but certain level of musicianship is displayed by the band, and although I couldn’t name them as another BM act, I’d say it could interest those people with a hunger for new and progressive sounds.
Demilich “20th adversary of Emptiness” 3lp/2cd
Svart Records.
This is a cool compilation done to commemorate the anniversary of Demilich, one of the most bizarre entities emerged from Finland during the early 90’s.
And of course, features their only album “Nesphite” together with a compilation of their demo recordings and a couple of re-recorded songs as well. Ok, I haven’t listened to their demos before, so I can’t compare them to the original sound as these have been re-mastered for this compilation. But the album definitely shows a new face.
Demilich showed to the whole underground back then that they were able to compose bizarre songs with highly intrincated riffing and structures, and even today they’re still a reference for the entire genre. Both, CD and LP versions come with a huge booklet featuring artwork, photos, lyrics, liner notes and a long interview. Get this piece of Finnish death metal History!!!
Denial of God “Death and the Beyond” 2LP / CD
Hells headbangers
This time the undead Ghouls are back after the greatly expected “Horrors of satan”, which was an incredible album to say the least.
And now, the band continue where they left with that album, it seems that it has been done on purpose because almost every element present on the previous album is also present on this one, and I thank them for that.
Also the clean and organic production is also there, which fits perfectly on the vinyl version.
The ghouls continue to offer their black metal with an enormous ammount of heavy metal influences, which is understandable and those melancholic and sinister melodies are great complements to their horror stories potrayed through their lyrics.
Their compositions have never been prolific, so to speak, but their intention is creating sinister atmospheres and bulding a musical landscape only comparable to watching an old horror movie, which I think is their intention.
Their basic and very inspired riffing is adorned with accoustic passages, whisperings and melodic outburts which will literally hook you through the entire album.
Oh, and by the way, this album is also a conceptual album, floating around Death and a beyond which is closer to you than what you’d like it to be! This is an Essential buy!
Denial of God “The Hallow Mass” 2CD/LP
Hells Headbangers/Osmose prod.
Ok, this legendary band needs no introduction, as it has been active and well during more than 25 years now, and this would be their third full length album.
What can we expect from a Denial of God album? A journey into the unknown and a communion with the dead and the un-living. They are masters in creating atmospheres and composing songs with strange and unique melodies and unexpected changes. And that’s what every release from them is so unique. Receiving an album from them, as I told you already, is a different and unique experience so I won’t spoil it for you by analyzing every song and lyric. I just need to tell you, that if you’re familiar with the band since their first album, then you should know what to expect from these ghouls. I will only say that this album, very much like the previous two, is not a concept album. There’s enough variety in there lyrically and musically, follows the same patterns already known from their previous outputs. Long tracks, eerie, unexpected and well constructed melodies, occasional guitar tremolos which enhance the main melodies and some keyboard work here and there which enhance even more the tracks. What could I say without spoiling for you the whole experience?? Probably you already have heard about their horror metal, and if you don’t, I’d suggest you to do so.
Der Sturmer “Transcendental Racial Idealism” LP / CD
Breath of Pestilence / Totenkopf Propaganda
I had reviewed this album a few years ago when it was released for the first time. But this re-release is something different because not only the layout has been modified, the cover art shown without the censored details when it was out for the first time, and the sound, which was originally harsh and I was pretty satisfied with it, it has been remastered.
The result? Well, this album sounds sharper this time and every instrument is clearly audible. Not to diminish the previous version, both sound good in their own way but still, if you haven’t managed to get it before, then this new version should be mandatory. Or even if you want to keep both versions.
After five years of being released the previous full length on Death to Mankind recs, finally this band is able to release this album, which musically is quite similar to that album but this time Athanwolf from Wolfnacht shares drum duties as well.
Lyrically, it wouldn’t be fair if I go into detail here in this review, as the thematic is varied but at the same time the main element of loyalty to the traditions and heritage is still there as always.
The songs, as usual, are spiced with the traditional intros which enhance the whole atmosphere.
Violent and blood-pumping metal and great artwork and aesthetics. Get your copy now.
Der Stürmer “Carellian Pagan Madness” LP
Satanic Skinhead Propaganda.
This was supposedly to be released on DVD instead of a LP, and that would have been a better choice indeed. Anyway, as this band hardly play live, it was a must for me to get this. First of all, I think that Der Stürmer is definitedly a live band. They just simply sound better on stage, and the songs have been chosen carefully. Even if there isn’t “The Hammer Falls on Zion”, at least my personal favorites were included. There’s also a Bound for Glory’s cover. The packaging was carefully done, and this album was limited to only 500 copies, so act fast.

Der Stürmer (Gre) / EVIL (Bra) split LP
IG Farben prod.
This obscure label specialized in releasing NSBM exclusively this time comes up with a very fitting split album, as a memory and testimony for those who managed to attend the now well known Hot Shower festival in Milano. And well, for those who didn’t, here it is at least the audio recording of both shows.
I don’t think that both shows are complete, as obviously they’re edited, but at least the chosen songs are quite known for both bands. As for the Der Stürmer side, the songs Megali Hellas and Forces of tradition are quite a rarity at least when it comes for a live show. The sound is clean and powerful, obviously it was recorded from the console.
As for the Evil side, this recording is quite special because it is indeed the first live show from them, and it is interesting to hear them live: the sound is tight and well balanced, obviously it was recorded from the console as well. But the vocals are really different: either they have played without any kind of effect or they simply do sound just tired, I don’t know.
This is a limited release, and for the very nature of this split, it is quite difficult to find it in Europe, except for those who know where to search…
Der Stürmer /Auschwitz Symphony Orchestra split LP/CD
Breath of Pestilence Records/Deathabyss prod.
The ever struggling Der Stürmer didn’t came with a new album this time, but with an incendiary split collaboration with another Incendiary act coming from Finland, A.S.O. Honestly, I do think that Der Stürmer is doing great with these splits and 7’eps they’re releasing instead of just recording new full lengths. I do think that working in this way keep them going with fresh ideas. As for their side of this split, they offer 4 strong tracks in the vein of their acclaimed “A banner…”, with emphasis in Hellenic culture, anti Semitism and WWII as their main topics. As a curious note, I couldn’t raise an eyebrow after listening that intro with the Charles Manson’s rants about the role of Judaism in WWII. But then again, Der Stürmer are unpredictable, but all we already know is that their songs are filled with adrenaline, force and enthusiasm and these tracks are not an exception.
As for the side of A.S.O, I must confess that after many years of listening to grind core, this band spawned again the enthusiasm for the genre. Their music is so common yet original, influenced by early Napalm Death but this time, unlike their previous recordings, with a bigger dose of Death metal, so I’d say that they’re more oriented towards grind death now. Anyway, I’d wish that they could elaborate more on their lyrics, even if the shortness of the tracks couldn’t allow that. Here, they present 26 tracks of hate filled grindcore. Anyway, this split is mandatory for those interested in any of these bands, which share a lot of common ground.
Der Stürmer /Command/Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes/Fogged by Fleshflies 4 way split CD/LP
Breath of Pestilence prod.
And this certainly another great release of this small but proficient label from Finland, who aren’t afraid of releasing killer stuff without worrying about political correctness.
And this release is certainly special, as it represents the return of the Brazillian NSBM cult act Command. And on this small dose of totalitarism they come with 3 tracks, which doesn’t re-assemble to their old stuff, and perhaps that’s understandable. Even if these tracks do follow the same patterns of sound of their previous recordings, that is, Black metal with strong RAC and punkish influences and samples of the third Reich, and they have kept their compositions primitive, the new tracks sound like a new era of the band, which is something good I do think.
As for the side of Der Stürmer, they do share their hateful collaboration In the form of 3 brand new tracks, two of them being mid tempo/ slower tracks. I do really appreciate the Japanese sampling of real kamikaze pilots on the song “Divine Deadly Winds”. This added a lot to that song atmosphere. It is also interesting that they have dedicated one track to Phosphorous/Lucifer, which shows a new side of the band.
Regarding Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes, this new but proficient band from Japan offers two tracks in the vein of a violent but very intricate form of black grind, they are effectively mixing aggression with fast and well thought riffing, I’ll have to check out more of this band in the future.
And lastly, there’s a project called “Fogged by Fleashflies” which comes from Japan as well, although there are no additional information about it. Unlike the others, they are an ambient/industrial kind of project, but, to be honest, their trance inducing sound doesn’t do anything to enhance this 4 way split, it just doesn’t fit here, not even as an outro. The label should have recruited a more fitting band to close this release, at least a band with a closer musical affinity, but that’s just my opinion.
Der Sturmer “Bloodsworn II” CD/2LP
Breath of Pestilence prod.
Following their tradition of compiling songs which were produced as limited editions 7Eps and splits, here comes this well established and recognized band again after 10 years of having released their first installment of “BloodSworn”. As for their musical approach, I won’t say a word since this band have developed their own style since the very beginning and they haven’t changed much with the years. However, when comparing this second part of Bloodsworn with the first one, it is easy to note that this time the band decreasing flow of releases have forced them to include complete splits with other bands in order to be able to release this in time. On the previous compilation, they only added bonus tracks and songs only found on 7’EPs. Here, they have added all of their songs included with their splits with A.S.O, Command/ Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes, Malsaint/Blutkult. For those who haven’t bought any of these splits, this addition is a well done move, but for the rest of those who only missed the vinyl only contributions, this addition would be something unnecessary. Anyway, if you were too lazy to get any of their releases included on this comp, then go for it and buy this album as you can’t go wrong with this band.
Destruktor “Opprobrium” LP / CD
Hells Headbangers.
And yes, after a period of nothing less than 6 years since their previous album, this time Destruktor returns as a trio, instead of a duo as in the case of “Nailed”.
And, having noticed that this band usually offers new musical perspectives with every album, this time “Opprobrium” follows the line already established with “Nailed”, that is, Black Death metal with a heavy sense of melody and clever riffing, presented in different tempos.
As for the lyrical side, they have stuck in the criticism of the three branches of eastern religion. And done with a basic and simple standpoint. Ok, that’s their way of presenting their music. Nothing to complain about but their lyrics seem to be very simplistic and over done by other bands, at least for the most part.
But in this case, music is their biggest accomplishment, definitedly.
Even if this album is petty short, they have established the fact that their ever growing interest in black death metal is still present through their own music.
Deverills Nexion “Sinister Tarot” LP
The Ajna Offensive
This is quite an unique album, because it was meant to be a private work of recording music but the author for some reason decided to make it available. This, as the booklet explains, is meant to be a private working, or better said yet, a musically explanation of their own version of the Sinister Tarot which was worked for their own private purposes.
Here, as they explain, are a musically transcription of their private Tarot cards. They, at least, have wanted to give sonic hints of specific places and situations of their own pace of magical working and overall community.
If they have succeeded with their task, only they will know, as obviously they haven’t included any visual section of the Tarot cards. But, the music, as they say, have been flowing naturally, mostly with the use of acoustic guitars and keyboards, vocals and the background of field recordings. So, basically what we have here are ambient based music, only understood by the ones who created it properly. As for us, the rest, can only imagine what kind of atmosphere they’re trying to convey.
Devilry “Treuelied” CD
Breath of Pestilence prod.
I do recall having listened to their previous EP called “Muslim Genocide” some years ago although I can’t recall how it sounded back then, but it is good to see perseverance in a band, especially in those whose stance is a pain in the ass for the current politically “correct” era of being offended by anything. And Devilry, is releasing their second album after nothing less than 10 years of having released the debut. I haven’t listened to that album so I won’t comment. So, let’s focus upon this new onslaught. Devilry is taking an smart musical approach in the sense that musically takes influences from the brutal death metal and also have incorporated a rather significant amount of melody within their compositions, under the form of what I would call melodic black death metal. And they do sound really good, refreshing, technical, dynamic, and at the same time brutal, and I don’t see why anyone into these kind of bands wouldn’t enjoy Devilry as well. I won’t say names as their influences are pretty varied.
This particular album is dedicated to the memory of Savitri Devi, and I’m pretty sure that ther lyrics are elaborated within the same spectrum of thought. Although it is quite unfortunate that they haven’t been included on the booklet, and I do believe that spreading their message properly is a fundamental part of the band’s raison d’etre. What else? Get this album, it’s really good and well done.
Diabolous666/ Putrid “Delenda Vitae Vita est” split CD
Pentagram records
These 2 local bands join forces because both were in demo stages prior to the release of this split. And actually there is a good reason for it: one member of Putrid has taken the responsability of Diabolous666’s compositions, and it clearly shows in this recording.
When it comes to Diabolous 666, it is obvious that the new member was trying to experiment with different influences when composing the music, as the songs turned out pretty heterogeneous, ranging from nordic oriented black metal to rawer stuff, with influences from Blasphemophagher, black witchery and the likes, in opposition to their demo which followed the same linear patterns. Is this a good sign? Perhaps, and depends only of the bands own vision.
As for Putrid, the songs are clearly more technical and of course show the same influences as their previous demo, that is, a mixture between black and death metal, with catchy riffs in between and clever arrangements. The intros used are very cheesy, especially the outro which is clearly out of place if you ask me. Ok, well, at least these 2 bands try to sound as original as they can without being the obvios copycats that most local bands have turned into.

Diocletian “War of All Against All” CD
Invictus Prod.
This new album shows a bit of “development” from the previous “Doom Cult”. The music remains as destructive and opressive as usual but this time the band is also exploring slower elements which serve well their purpose: for example the last song “fortress...” was built entirely upon slow riffs, and it shows indeed the reason of this: the song itself it is a wall of stone, as heavy and impenetrable as the title suggest. The album’s production this time is a bit different. Way less muddy, but this fact doesn’t take away the aggressiveness and sonic destruction characteristic of Diocletian’s sonic assaults. This is one of these bands that have a clear idea of how their releases should sound like and what they have to do in order to accomplish the desired results...
Diocletian “Gesundrian” LP / CD
Osmose productions
And this time Diocletian signed to osmose prod. I don’t know if that’s a good move for them, but let’s continue to the album itself. First of all, everyone familiar with Diocletian should know what to expect with Gesindrian. This time, the production returned somehow to what the debut was: muddier and heavy. Basically the songs presented on this album do show the elements which made Diocletian one of the heaviest and monolithic bands with the Black / death genres. And they continue where they left with “War of all against All”. Although the vocals this time reminds me those of AngelCorpse though.
Lyrically, I could describe this album as some kind of “thematic” album, as all of the lyrics have been influenced by the same author and concept. However, they couldn’t have found a better influence for their lyrics. I won’t go into detail about them, but the perspective debated on the lyrics fit perfectly the nature of Diocletian’s previous approach. Give it a try.
Diocletian “Amongst the Flames of a Burning God” LP/CD
Profound Lore records.
This is a proper re-incarnation of the well known War Metal act Diocletian. And I say re-incarnation because with their previous album, “Gesundrian”, the band was supposed to rest for good. However, they have renewed and reinforced again.
Diocletian means conflict as a mean to achieve self-mastery. This could be viewed from many different angles. And with this album, they have focused and developed this idea into a individualistic and collective approach. But this approach needed a proper sound to impulse everything into a proper destructive mean. “Amongst the Flames…” is a very violent album, and with this violence comes minimalism and a clear influence from Conqueror/Revenge, whose warlike approach suits very well the very nature of this album.
“Amongst the Flames” is to be played in a single row and experience the level of violence and primal aggression that this band can be able to deliver. And this violence is re-enforced and supported by Black Witchery’s lead vocalist Impurath.
Everything, from the lyrical department, music and aesthetics which may seem provocative but surprisingly fitting, reflects war, conflict and self-advancement which comes from discipline of Iron and strife. Everything comes with a price, and if these songs of conflict don’t inspire you reach new heights for your own self, then what else could? Get this album and experience the brutality of adrenaline and iron fist attacks.
Disinter “Guerra Eterna” CD
War Ogre records
At this point everybody into Peruvian underground death metal scene should know already these veterans formed in 1993. Surprisingly they have kept releasing music despite of having been on hold during several years for a couple of occasions. With this album they have proven once more how to perform flawless old school death metal, taking influences not only from recognized foreign acts, but I would also say that there’s a little Mortem here and there as well, which is not a bad thing at all.
This particular album has been divided into 3 chapters, containing each 3 tracks plus a respective intro. This is certainly adequate, having into consideration that this band have divided their lyrics into different concepts, being Andean paganism, war, death and gore and also homage to National heroes, which also take part as an identitarian identification with the concept of being Peruvian. Having proceeded in such a way, this album is more concise and cohesive, as they haven’t thrown aleatory tracks with no purpose. However, this local edition (War Ogre records) haven’t listed the intros as tracks, even if they are present on the cd and this could be misleading as there are 12 tracks in total instead of just 9 as written on the backcover. Perhaps they have fixed this on the European edition.
All in all, this album is well written, performed, and the overall art done with great care and also the production is very clean but powerful at the same time and I really have no complaints whatsoever. The fact that this band have survived despite all well known adversities is remarkable too.
Dreadful Relic “Warlords of Cosmic Sovereign” LP
Frost and Fire records.
Besides the interview done for the 10th Psicoterror, I’ve also reviewed the debut demo tape from this band. And well, even when no one expected anything new from them in a near future, they arrive with this EP under their belt. Of course, being Dreadful Relic a band submerged into the early roots of archaic Metal, this EP is also heavily influenced by old Celtic Frost, with the inclusion of a Treblinka cover and twowell fitting intros done by “Desolate Wings…” of the well known Demoncy.
I won’t discuss the lyrical side of this EP, but , just like the demo debut, it is a conceptual release, this time focusing into the Horrors that lurk among the Stars, or as Lovecraft used to call them, the Primordial Ones.
Dreadful Relic don’t want to create a new style or brand of Metal, but simply to submerge into the roots of Metal, both musically and lyrically.
Dreadful Relic “Hyborian Sorcery” LP/CD
Nuclear War Now Prod/ Frost and Fire records.
For those who have read the interview with this band featured on the tenth edition of Psicoterror, will know that Dreadful Relic are not a band with the premise of re-creating a sound already exploited far and wide through the entire history of Black and death metal. They do it for a reason, though. The link between the archaic elements within black and death metal in lyrics are music are intertwined and they simply belong to each other. Dreadful Relic explores not only the foundations of Black and death metal musically, but also they have explored and dive deep with the pre-historic writings of Robert E. Howard which served perfectly to illustrate and justify their musical introspection. “Hyborian Sorcery” is a journey to the foundations of ancient metal and ancient mythical realms, where Gods, Men, Demigods and Demons interacted in such a way of Barbaric Conflict and struggle for domination. In order to properly illustrate this, they have chosen to go into the very roots of metal, being Hellhammer / Celtic frost and old Samael their main influences. Yes, their songs may become intuitive for those who are familiar with these bands, but they do manage somehow to impress with unexpected elements within their music. As with previous releases, they have also included a few ambient pieces to set the mood of the record and surprisingly they work well.
Dreadful Relic is a band which is showing to the new generations the primigenious and basic elements which forged Black and Death metal, and making everything anew as a remembrance of what Archaic metal was, and how this can’t be changed with Time, even if trends may come and go.
Drowned “Idola Specus” LP / CD
Sepulchral Voice prod.
And now this album came as a surprise indeed. I remember purchasing their mini “viscera Terrae” a few years ago, and indeed it was a blast. Well inspired and well thought old school death metal. Indeed, these German veterans took their time to compose quality stuff, and we were waiting for their debut album impatiently. Please remember that this band was formed during 1992, but for some strange reason they never released a debut album. And now at last it is out. There are a few differences though. First of all Mr. Mors Dalos from necros Christos is no longer on vocals and synths, in fact, this album doesn’t feature synths at all.
Idola Specus is an old school death metal album all the way through. Period. At first sight their riffs may seem to be just that, mid tempo oriented with an extra dose of heaviness, but after multiple listens they show themselves in all their glory. Idola Specus doesn’t rely on neither fastness nor intricacy, but on darkness and heaviness. And that’s exactly what old school necro death metal is all about. The production and guitars sound thick, massive and Rotten, as well as the vocals. There were a few death metal jewels released during this year, and I’s say that Idola Specus is one of them.

Ejecución “Engendro del Abismo Eterno” comp CD
Necronausea records.
Ejecucion was a local band, coming from the city of Ica, Peru which for some reason I never bothered to check out, even if I recall I’ve seen their demos somewhere. These, as expected, were poorly done demos and perhaps that was the reason I never cared. After lisning for the first time to this compilation, which contains their 2 demos from 2014, their split cd from 2015, and their EP from 2017 I must recognize one thing: these guys aren’t amateurs. Never were. Granted on their debut demo, sounded pretty raw but their style of black thrash metal was pretty well cemented, and from there, easily anyone can notice their progression and care for better sound and production. As for influences, I couldn’t name any really. Perhaps I’m quite rusty with their style of music, but their riffing and songs sound solid, fresh well done and executed. Lyrics dealing with a number of subjects, mostly heretic of course…on early demos they opted for Spanish language and then switched to English, perhaps their idea was at last promoting themselves abroad. Sadly this didn’t happen. Anyway, Necronausea has done a cool job by compiling these releases in chronological order and therefore keeping alive the memory of this fine act.
Eisenwinter “Armee der Arischen Untoten” CD
Supremacy Through Intolerance prod.
This is the new album, unfortunately releaed by the now defunct German label S.T.I.
Indeed, if you have listened the previous 2 albums, you’ll know what to expect, and this one isn’t different either. Ten songs clocking in only 18 minutes. The style is pretty well known and already established as the riffs sound like no other band, with little bits of folkish music which give s the songs a “happy” feel if that’s the correct term...
But I’m still preferring the previous album. It’s just that these songs are of a very similar tempo and the guitar tone is somehow buried and the riffs get lost...
Well anyway, despite of this, Eisenwinter developed their own style and I’d say that this album is a continuation of the previous two. Try to get your copy in case that this isn’t repressed.
Eisenwinter / Nokturne split 10” MLP
Darker than Black records
Ok, I must recognize that I’ve purchased this release for Eisenwinter alone. I hadn’t listened to Nokturne before so I thought that it would be interesting to give it a try. So, I found out that Nokturne is a North American black metal band active since the mid 90’s very much like Eisenwinter is. And well, after a tasteful intro, the band attack with full force with a fast and aggressive track of Black death metal. But that wouldn’t be all, as the second track wouldn’t follow the same pattern, as that one is a catchy song pretty influenced by RAC. AS for Eisenwinter, those who are familiar with this one man project should know what to expect, more of an interesting an original take of black metal with a unique sound. There are a couple of tracks here, unusually long as this project is characterized by composing short and fast paced songs, but these are catchy and mostly mid paced although retaining the traditional sound.
Few times I find a split release interesting enough to give it a try. Fewer I discover that all bands are good. In the case of this split, I’ve found both Nokturne and Eisenwinter competent in what they do and this compensates the short playing time of this split MLP.
Elysian Blaze “Blood Geometry” 3LP / CD
Osmose Productions.
Mutaatis, the sole member behind this project, took indeed his time in order to unleash his latest album, and pinnacle of everything he has done so far with Elysian Blaze.
And after listening to this inmense album, it is understandable why it took a long time to be finally out. “Blood geometry” is a gargantuan album, an inmense piece of dark music carefully composed and executed in its totality.
I won’t go into many details about this album, it would definitedly take me a lot to say and lot to analyse and comment, but, as established before on “levitating the carnal”, Mutaatis has created, in over 2 hours of playing time, a journey through the dark corridors of mind and hidden corners of space, by mixing elements of his well known “funeral black metal” with symphonic elements and even ambient soundscapes which complement each other in a very profuse and natural way. Everything flows naturally, nothing is forced, chaos and order collide and co-exist together perfectly.
Even if you’re not too fond of enormous songs, I’d suggest you to take your time to analyse this album, it’s that good.
And this time the muddy production has been left aside, and everything is audible which enhances the whole experience. Buy it, be it on vinyl or cd, although I’d recomment the cd version for practical reasons.
Empty “The House of Funerary Hymns” LP / CD
De Tenebrarum Principio.
Honestly this is the first time that I listen to this Spanish Black Metal act. I’m impressed by the fact that it doesn’t sound like an avaerage Black metal band. Sure, it has obvious nordic influences as Emperor and the likes, but somehow Empty has managad to create some unique sound, which is based upon sinister and evocative melodies and somber lyrics and histories.
This is the first album that I listen from them so I couldn’t comment about their previous efforts, but certainly Empty is in good path of becoming one of the most important traditional BM acts from Spain.
And BTW, the cover art is unusual for a Moyen kind of art, but certainly looks good, although it makes me remember to “Them”...

En Carne Muerta “Necrovirosis” CD
Necronausea records.
And this another good band coming from Venezuela, and it seems that Necronausea has a special approach for Venezuelan bands. En Carne Muerta basically play some kind of Melodic Death metal, mostly at mid tempo, which for some reason re-assembles to the very old and great Spanish Avulsed. Even the gory lyrics are there, but this time spiced with some lyrics about Karma and some other undesirable (sic) and “morally” induced topics. Well, anyway, The production is good, perhaps a little too clean for my taste but every instrument is still present, the solos are not ever present but when they do appear, the songs become very much interesting. In fact, this is an album with a good production, and good presentation done by this “young” label. I wish they could find a bigger audience because they do deserve it.

Erotic Devil Worship “Necrocrust” CD
Espiritus Inmundos Records.
Well, basically this is a compilation of every demo and split recorded by this local band before the release of their first full length. And of corpse, following the tradition and the aesthetic preference of the band, this release came out modestly done, then packaging arranged even as a promo cd.
Ok, back to the topic: as stated, this cd is basically a compilation demos, eps , splits and even they have added a few live tracks. As a matter of utility, this seems to be quite a good idea. As a matter of packaging, content and aesthetic value, it is not. And I’ll tell you why: first of all, in order to cram everything into this compilation, the band have “sacrificed” or even “ mutilated” the content of the original sources, in a more specific way, many intros, which, in my opinion, served greatly to the listener for setting everything in the right mood before listening the whole recording. They were quite essential in my opinion.
Also, they have kept the original artwork for every release. At Least partially I’d say. If you want to ignore these facts, then this compilation might work for you. Erotic Devil worship is a project dedicated to Morbid Thrash / Punk with quasi porn and deviated lyrical content. And in such a way, the GG Allin cover is welcomed. But, the band sounds just too clean sounding and the vocals too clean as well, rawer approach should have been welcomed of course. But well you can’t have everything, can you?

Evil “Ashes of Old” LP / CD
Hammer of Damnation prod.
Well after nothing less than 6 years and several splits, eps and compilations, the Brazilian cult BM Evil have released a second album. And indeed this is something special. With Ashes of Old, the band have revisited all of their career of nothing less than 20 years of unleashing traditional BM. And this album is really a testament on its own. Here, the band not only offers new anthems but also re-recorded old songs which were their trademark back in the days. A nice surprise here is also the inclusion of a piano piece performed by Newton S. from the piano project Lebensessenz.
Evil needs no introduction anyway, those who have listened to in in the past know very well their abilities to perform traditional BM from the 90’s, primitive and catchy, with lyrics focused on paganism resurgence and the importance of the blood as a bond to the past. And the musical aspect also presents some folkish touches and elements.
This is something special, get this album, really a tribute and a testament of a band which have shown constancy and devotion over the years.
Evil “To the Fallen and free” CD
Hammer of Damnation recs.
It’s always great when a prolific band such as Evil takes the chance to keep their releases always available, even those released as limited quantities. And so, here they compile a few of previously individual-released songs plus a couple of songs composed during 1994 by re-recorded during 2013 for this release. And there’s a reason for doing this: This compilation is a tribute to the band’s old member called “black goat” who was murdered back in the days. So, in such a way, this this Evil’s tribute to him.
It is also interesting to note, though, the musical evolution which the band have come throughout all these years. And perhaps this was due to their former composers as well. All in all, if you have listened to Evil before, then you should already know that this release is a must.
Evil “Twilight and Mourning/Where the sun ws never born”CD
Hammer of Damnation recs.
And so, here’s another compilation of long sold out releases. This Cd compiled the 22 minutes epic “Twilight and Mourning” song featured originally on the split LP with Lone Suffer, and for the other side they have included their entire side of their split album with Drowning the Light. That was a good choice because personally I’ve never enjoyed DTL!.
As for the music itself, well it sounds like Evil of course, basically a primitive but very catchy form of 90’s influenced Black Metal which is of course very well known and appreciated by the BM enthusiasts.
What else?? This is a cooperative release between Hammer of damnation and the German Darker than black. Get it!!!
Ex- Deo “Caligula” CD
Napalm Records.
I must admit that I was interested in this particular band due to their approach: Epic death metal with symphonic elements inspired in the glorious days of the Roman Empire. Or at least that’s the way it’s described by the label. But being a project of such dimensions with a fairly commercial approach I should have known that there was something hidden... Well, Ex Deo just delivers that, with a “secure” and extremely superficial perspective. To begin with, the cover art is extremely photoshoped which was a letdown and a omen what was about to come…Ex deo’s music is just that: bland death metal with superficial and –of course- politically correct lyrics when certain aspects of Roman history are mentioned- just in case- a warning for the politically correct magazines or listeners who will be exposed to this album. However, the most interesting aspect is the heavily orchestration and symphonic treatment of the songs, and believe me that without it, those songs wouldn’t shine at all. Perhaps I was expecting too much from these guys, anyway, the album will satisfy those looking for a superficial treatment of the subject, and those interested in metal with symphonic elements.
Exorcist “Nightmare Theatre” 2CD / LP
High Roller records.
I won’t go deeper into details regarding the music of this already classic album, but as this official re-issue arrived after many years (and many many bootlegs) since it was released as LP back in the 80’s, this re-release deserves a recognition because of the fact of way it has been handled to begin with.
This re-issue (and I’m going to review specifically the double cd) is basically a triple offering, which turned out to be a pleasant experiment in itself.
First of all, here we’ll find nothing less than 3 versions f the very same album, presented in such a different way and with a different vision. The first 2 versions, entitled “the Father” and “the Son”, are basically the same album remastered by, on the Father section, by the “band” in the USA, and on the “son” section, by the label in Germany. They turned out sounding quite different, but I do however think that the original essence of the 80’s release has been kept intact.
AS for the third section called “the Unholy Ghost”, even if you thought you’ve heard enough of this album, then you’ll discover that it is a completely new listening experience. Here, the album has been totally re-mixed and I’d even say, new vocal arrangements have been added as well, in fact the label have paid attention to the rich vocal work…I’m even listening sections I thought they simply weren’t there, or perhaps they were added afterwards???
The nice culmination comes later, as they have included some un-released tracks which weren’t included in the original album, which I think they didn’t make it to the final cut.
Unfortunately the vinyl edition just features only one version of the album plus one bonus track, so I’d suggest you to get the double cd instead. Excellent work done (again) by High Roller records.
Exterminator “Total Extermination” LP
Greyhaze records
This is, at last, an official re-release on vinyl of this little Brazilian jewel, originally released during the mid 80’s and for some reason never was re-released officially. There are a number of bootlegs out there but obviously of inferior quality soundwise, as this album hasn’t been released on cd, so those bootlegs are just cheap digital transfers. Therefore, Greyhaze have taken the proper care to re-release this with great quality, as this album sounds better than ever, at least better than my old bootleg hahahah.
As for the album itself, yes, Exterminator is an ugly band: they can’t play properly and also their songs are amateurishly written and performed, with little or no structure at all. But these factors is what make this album a memorable listening experience. This is one of the pioneers of many of the bestial black death metal bands not only in Brazil, but also influence to many others.
I do find unacceptable though the decision of the label about censoring the original cover art in favor of a bigger distribution. Exterminator was an underground band, and as such, they should have been distributed through underground channels which don’t give a fuck about political correctness. Censoring extreme metal acts is totally ridiculous and unacceptable. Anyway, you should get this for historical value, but also because this band deserved it. It is not for everyone but it is the way that it must be anyway.
Flammentod “Chattenkrieg” CD
Blutvergiessen Prod.
This German band released this new effort in a limited edition of course. Nothing less than 30 minutes aprox of pure pro-germanic Black Metal, whose sound can be described as a Very violent and at the same time harsh sounding and extremely primitive brand of Black metal, with a very militant approach indeed.
And when i say harsh, I really mean Harsh BM, with some arrangements which could be taken as “mistakes”, but for some odd reason they fit surprisingly good in these songs. The lyrics are written in German therefore I can’t comment on them.

Folkstorm “De Stemmen Van Het Woud” CD
Thorn Laceration Records
This is the first album of a Dutch project which I thought to be kind of folkish in its nature. I was wrong, because the music here sounds more mid tempo/depressive kind of black metal, heavily trusting in the strength of the riffs. The problem here is that even if the riffs can be quite brilliant, they’re not enough to construct a good song. That is because the main composer is trying to build a hypnotic atmosphere by repeating the main riff over and over throughout the song. Therefore, this album could be easily be a mini cd, as it features only 3 proper songs and 2 ambient pieces. Honestly, it’s not a bad album but it grows out pretty fast.

Force of Darkness “Absolute verb of Chaos and Darkness” CD
Hells Headbangers
Originally released by the German Iron Pegasus on vinyl, this is basically an EP which sows to the new generations the high level achieved by Chilean bands.
Force of Darkness offers plenty of a blitzkrieg of a sound, death thrash fast, aggressive and relentless, and this short EP is listened as just one fast shot. The band sound really tight. Fast and aggressive, and no, they don’t need any more recorded music here to show why they’re currently one the leading forces of the Chilean underground.
This EP is beautifully complemented by exclusive artwork done by Self Desecrator.
Forlorn Winds “Hel” Mini cd/Promo
Breath of Pestilence.
Anyone into US NSBM should be aware of this band, as they have already released two full lengths under the German Darker than Black records. To be honest, I’ve never paid too much attention until now, since this seems to be their strongest material so far. In such regards, I think that it is unnecessary to release a “teaser” of the soon to be released new album. They don’t need that. By listening to these 2 tracks, I can understand why they could be that enthusiastic about their new music: both tracks sound really strong, the riffing is very concise and, even with their quite formulaic way of playing Melodic Black Metal, they have managed to do something very interesting and original with an style which could have been done and overdone at this point. And that is certainly good. Having listened to this mini cd over and over I must say that if the rest of the material is as solid as this, then they should release a very important pagan Black metal album for the next year 2020.
Funeral Mist “Hecatomb” CD/LP
Norma Evangelium Diaboli
As usual, and without any warning, this solo project strikes again with a new album after several years of having released “Maranatha”(ten years, to be precise). And of course, no album is similar to each other, but I’m afraid therefore that they won’t be able to top their best: “Salvation”.
As for Hecatomb, even if it sounds in some ways different from the rest (starting from the production), it could be described as a logical (and weaker) continuation of Maranatha. Well, at least Maranatha, albeit of being less violent than Salvation, at least featured an intelligent and prolific use of samples which gave shape and soul to their tracks. Here, the use of samples, even if a couple of songs are structured around these, are far less present, and their songs just rely in the use of catchy elements which maintain to keep the required listening attention. The new Marduk album comes to my mind. It is still a Marduk album, but offers little, just drop by drop of the required essence just to keep you immersed into it.
As for the lyrical approach, well it hasn’t changed and I won’t comment on it, but it s clear that their use of sample within this album put them into evidence about the idea of their tenets and ideals of Evil. Their best tracks? Naught but death , Hosanna and Cockatrice; they do show a clever use of samples.
Then again. Hecatomb shows that a more basic riffing, some cleverly use of samples and damn good vocals can make working any Funeral Mist album. Is this sufficient for the high standards established by the band? Perhaps not to my own taste. I’m not saying here that Hecatomb is bad, but it is their weakest effort to date.
Funeral oration “Eliphas Love” LP/CD
Avantgarde prod.
I will say it again. I remember this band. In fact, it is quite surreal that they have managed to release a second album after more than 20 years of being inactive. But they did it; and I’m not too fond of “comeback” albums, even if I’m not really sure to call this album like that. But one thing is certain: with “Eliphas Love”, this band has made something unheard, old and new at the same time and with a unique identity. They have manage to mix, with their brand of black metal, a mixture of the sound from the north and the south, the Mediterranean and the Scandinavian with all that this implies. Yet, they have managed to keep it fresh and innovative, not only with the riffing itself, but also with the several arrangements with keyboards which notably enhance the triumphant and evocative tone of the album.
And this particular tone serves very well to the nature of the album: I would say here that the songs serve as a background for the religious aesthetics and recitation / declamation of the lyrics, which, with the exception of the song “Furor Eretico” (which is written by the vocalist), arfe basically poems and extracts from the writings of Austin Osman Spare, M. Rollinat, Saint Yves D’Alveydre and Stanislas de Guaita. With this I say that both vocals and music, are two different entities but serve the same purpose.
One thing is clear: if you’re looking for more than just mere entertainment but a true reflection of Religious Art and Meditations for the Devil with an honest approach, then this album is for you.
Funeral Oration “Antropomorte” LP/CD
Avantgarde records
After the comeback album Eliphas Love, it was a big surprise that this band returned quickly with a new album which follows practically the same formula exposed on Eliphas Love, that is, aesthetically, lyrically and musically. And having said that, I must say that, once again, everything worked well as expected. Musically everything follows the same spectrum as exposed on “Eliphas Love”, that is, a strong sense of melody with symphonic arrangements interwoven with lyrics either written by their singer Luca la Cara and translations of writings by differents authors, such as R. de Gourmont, Salvator Rosa, A. Samain and M Rollinat.
As with the previous album, this a reflection of the Religious and the Classical and everything from the aesthetics, to the texts and music show exactly that. Funeral Oration for some reason, and as expected from old bands, are not as valued as they should be, especially coming from a modern audience looking for something easy to behold and digest. In such a case, this Italian act shows much, much more and shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is black metal done by people who have experience and knowledge in what they are doing, and know by heart the genre since the early days.
Funeral Storm “Arcane Mysteries” LP/CD
Hells Headbangers.
I must admit that I had little knowledge about this project before this album was released and advertised. After checking out, I discovered that this one was indeed an old band, if it could be considered in such a way. As such, they had released a handful of small releases and collaborations, and suffered an important number of line up changes. All in all, after this debut album was advertised, and after knowing that Stefan from Varathron was involved, I was interested enough to give this album a try. Gladly I did. Funeral Storm is a band longing and recreating the magic of the early 90’s Hellenic black metal, with the sound it became renowned for; middle paced riffing mixed with Heavy Metal influences, and arcane lyrics touching ancient mysteries, mythology and the occult. You have everything here, they have even included a Varathron cover “Flowers of my Youth” from the “Majesty…” album. The point is if this album could be considered simply as a retrospective to the old Greek scene or as a unique and honest album in itself. Thing is, after listening to it, the experience is very much alike when listening to old glories, and if that’s their intention, they have achieved it without doubt, and you can be sure that I’ll be keep coming to this album from time to time.

It was a pleasant surprise to know that this project was “resurrected” again. The last thing I knew about it was when Mr. MacFarlane released “Sickness Falling”, which was the demo that motivated me to interview him for the 7th issue. Anyway, it would be impossible to compare this album to previous works, as usual, because this new album is totally different. It wouldn’t be possible to describe this kind of “Black Ambient” with mere words, it must be experimented in all its ritualistic darkness. Six long songs which touch the dense curtains of the abyss.

Funereal Presence “Achatius” LP/CD

As you probably know, this is the second album of this solo project, composed by Negative Plane’s drummer named as “Bestial Devotion”. Is very well known that Negative Plane have ventured themselves into more progressive realms and in such a way, what Bestial Devotion has pursued and achieved through this personal solo project is something remarkable. When he released his first album in 2014 titled “The Archer takes Aim”, he clearly stated that he wanted to achieve a more traditional Black Metal sound, yet original. Their second album, titled “Achatius”, or “Agathius” as you may prefer to call him, centered in the story of the Catholic “Saint” or “Martyr” with the same name, consolidates his original approach to the genre. Four long tracks, based upon traditional riffs from the second wave of black metal wouldn’t do too much if they weren’t graced and complemented by several arrangements which would keep intact the interest in all compositions, and more. The songs, through these solos, acoustic passages which unfold themselves until they do reach a climax before fading again and then eventually die, and a new chapter starts. It is interesting to note that this is a more traditional black metal album with interesting arrangements and perspectives, not found on another releases of similar nature. I won’t describe the songs themselves. As he has said about this album: “ I wanted to create an album with the kind of music that I like to listen to myself”, and in this regard, “Achatius” is original and traditional at the same time. Give it a try.
