Macabre “Grim Scary Tales” CD / 2x 10” LP
Decomposed Rec. / Willowtip / Hammerheart prod.
After many years, the legendary Macabre have at last another album. As a fan myself (I was a card bearer Murder Club member back in the days!), I obviously know that the band won’t repeat their “Sinister slaughter” anymore. Rather, they have recorded a “follow up” -so to speak- to their previous “Murder Metal album”. This means, the songs doesn’t follow the death metal / grind references anymore, but they have a more melodic and ironic approach instead. The songs are simple, mostly verse-chorus-verse-chorus, but, they have arranged them extremely well which absolutely show their musical abilities.
The vocals also, are mostly clear, and even the lyrics, they are significatively longer now which is a good thing for those interested in serial killers.
This is not a concept album per-se, BUT most of the songs are focused upon classic serial killers, and perhaps that’s the common link which unite them.
With Macabre you can’t go wrong, support them by buying their stuff.

Macabre “Carnival of Killers” LP/CD
Nuclear Blast.
Well what can I say, one of my all time favorite bands finally managed to release a new album after many years, and through Nuclear Blast. So they have managed to return to that label even as I remember having read some complaints about them on old interviews. Anyway…I originally thought that their return to Nuclear Blast would mean that they would also return to form, that is, either finally being able to release their long awaited Fishtails, or record another album in the vain of Sinister Slaughter. But I guess I’m wrong, again.
Look, Macabre started as a death metal band primarily, spiced with some humorous elements and songs inspired by children’s music, which make their music varied. But with time, they have left the death elements behind and those children’s music songs became their main driven influence. In such a way, the Macabre we all knew and liked softened and changed with time.
Carnival of Killer could be seen as the continuation of their previous “Grim Scary Tales”. Not that’s a bad thing btw, but they are not the Macabre I used to appreciate since the very beginning when I listened to their demo and Grim Reality EP. Their abilities as musicians remain top notch, but with this album, the spices became the norm. Ah well, I guess that hoping for them to return to their glorious days of Sinister S. and Dahmer is too much to ask for anyway. I purchased this album because it is Macabre and I always purchase their albums, but they have softened with time sadly.
Maieutiste s/t CD
Les Acteurs De L’Ombre prod.
And so, this álbum is about philosophy and trying to reflect that philosophy into music, correct?. This is an album that tookover 5 years in the making as the label states, and I clearly see why. There is a lot of musical elements, varied influences and much more to be discovered in here. The label name their music as “black metal” although I couldn’t find any link to their sound that could match that description, with the exception of a few elements here and there. Honestly, the music sounds like an amalgam of metal, doom, jazz, ambient and what not. And perhaps in finding their identity as a band is exactly what this album lacks in perspective and vision, and that’s their weakness. First of all, I don’t know where does the album is heading to. Such a big work, which took a few years in the making at least should illustrate their listeners what are they trying to do with their music in the first place.
However, this album sounds tedious and very sinuous to listen to due to the great extent of influences. They’re very prolific in what they do, but sadly that’s not enough in order to convey a series of ideals reflected into music. To my ears, they tend to sound boring after a few songs.
Maligno / Maleficia “Satánica Mortandad” split cd
Necronausea records
This is quite a discovery in the sense that unites two bands coming from Nicaragua which share the same roots because both are related to each other. In fact, Maligno was the precursory band created in 1993 and whose short career was limited to just one demo, which is included here of course. Maligno is a death metal band with a huge rhythmic and some melodic approach, even hints of thrash metal I’d dare to say. Their demo sounds raw of course, but it is discernible and pretty much underground for the time it was recorded. These are nothing less than 8 tracks, sung in Spanish. After being released this demo, some of the band members left in order to form their next band called Maleficia, which is active until today if I’m right. This band, formed in the year 1996, released one demo on that very year, which is of course included in this split. This demo shows a continuation in sound from their previous band, but with a more solid death metal approach, noticeably more technical and faster. As bonus tracks, they have included tracks from their albums from 2012 and 2018 respectively. These show a much refined, technical sound, more oriented towards Brutal Death Metal.
This release is not only meant to be a compilation, but a testimony of the progression of a young band which achieves a professional level with years of rehearsals and hard work. Pretty much recommended.
March of Heroes “March for Glory” CD
Rage Of Eden
This album is supposed to be first installment of a trilogy. This French project is based upon diverse aspects of the WWII, seen from the point of view of the Soviets and the Axis forces. The songs, as they state in their CD, are influenced by acts such as Triarii, Sophia, Karjalan Sissit and the likes, although I’d say that they’re focused into the percussion aspect of Militaria, with the exception of the song “Victory is our Fate”, which features beautiful chorals and suits perfectly to the tragic atmosphere of the album. Try to get this through your local distributor, as the label states that this release is already sold out.
Marduk “Serpent Sermon” CD / LP
Blooddawn rec / Century Media.
With this album I was surprised to find a sober and modest presentation after the previous albums which were kind of prolific. As minimalistic as this album actually is, undoubtely this is Marduk in every sense of the word. What you expect from them is that. Another typically sounding Marduk album. I think that they have reached a point where little progress can be made; the typical Marduk trademark is still here, the strong riffing is still here as well as the varied vocals done of course by Arioch. This album, just like the previous ones, could be classified as a theme/concept album, based upon the thematic of Hell and Damnation basically, and the lyrics are pretty Catholic in form even when touching an obvious Blasphemic thematic.
The songs, very much in the tradition of the last couple of albums, vary between fast and mid paced songs.
As I have stated above, Marduk have found their sound a long time ago, and even if they managed to experiment a little bit with every album and try to make it special, if you have heard the band then you already know how it is going to sound like.
Mare “Ebony Tower” LP/CD
Terratur possessions.
“Ebony tower represents the very keep of the creative genius, the citadel of withdrawal and introspectional pursuit”. A monument of excessive creativity, or better said, a consequence of it. Certainly, with this statement the band has stated that this album would be their pinnacle of their creativity as composers and creators. There is a risk of stating this, however, especially if they are planning to continue with the band as such. Having reached their pinnacle already, why should they bother to keep releasing stuff which is not to be consider of the same caliber? Perhaps, their inspiration is not over yet. But well, to the point with this album. For those who have experienced Mare in the past, should recognize that their “Nidrosian” black metal was a conservative faction of the old traditional Norwegian Black metal in essence. Of course, injecting their own venom t the whole. Fast, aggressive, conservative. Yet still rabid and raw. With Ebony Tower they have indeed immersed themselves into a more introspectional vision and pursuit. With a more clean production, compositions charged with melody and accompanied by clean and chanted vocals whose atmosphere reminds me of De Mysteriis. Basically Ebony Tower is a clever album, a meditative album and focused not on aggression explicitly but into exploring the dark recesses of the Mind and Self for a quest of something greater than Oneself. In such a way, it is easy to realize why Lamia Vox was the one whose art would mark the boundaries of Ebony Tower. Immerse yourself into this tremendous effort and do learn without hesitation the meaning of well thought Black Metal.
Maze of Terror “Ready to Kill” CD / LP
Empire records.
It is always good to see a Peruvian band which has maintained their career as low profile, and after releasing just a promotional EP, managed to get a contract for a full album.
To be honest, I haven’t listened to that EP, but I managed to get a glimpse of this album and so I decided to grab a copy.
Maze of Terror delivers quality Thrash metal, and this debut album, besides of being well produced and recorded, also displays a very hard work and musicianship which is something lacking in most local bands: the songs are quite varied in the sense that they’re heterogeneous concerning their development as song writers; some of them are basically structured while others are more complex and exceptionally well arranged. The technical level displayed especially by the lead guitar is undeniably above average and all in all this album shows enthusiasm and dedication for delivering quality thrash oriented tracks.
As for the lyric department, they are well written and conceived, even if the topic used don’t break the boundaries for the already established lyrical department of the average thrash band out there.
All in all, this is a unusual release and should be checked out.

Maze of Terror “Offer to the Fucking Beasts” CD
Xtreem Music
After a solid debut, local death thrashers of Maze of Terror return with a second album which obviously had a hard to top effort. Under similar circumstances, bands have usually two options to choose from: either they soften their deliveries because supposedly they have achieved what they were looking for in the first place with their previous album, or simply they push their asses and outdo themselves. With Maze of Terror the second option was indeed the option chosen by the band. “Offer to the fucking beasts” is a step forward in terms of sound, production and compositions. With this album the band have not found only a way to push themselves as musicians, but also to overcome their own sound by adding a fitting punchy, bassy production to enhance their dynamic, adrenaline boosted tracks. I have always thought that thrash metal, as well as death metal work best with dynamism and heavy sound wisely combined. With this album Maze of Terror have achieved both. “Offer…” is an album to be listened in one take and whose agile and aggressive tracks won’t let you turn it off until the last notes of the Shub Niggurath infestation are played and delivered.
Here’s without doubt a solid effort from a band which don’t want to play just safe by redoing what others have done in the past, but studying, digesting and excreting their own style and filth knowing that it will be well received.
Medieval Demon “Black Coven” LP/CD
Hells HEadbangers records
Hellas’ Medieval Demon is a band that I remember from the 90’s, but not because they stood above the rest of the Greek BM acts of the time. Their vampyric approach, gothic like aesthetics was not something I really was attracted to at the time. However, once they reunited with new vigor, things changed. They returned as a traditional Greek sounding Black Metal with a heavy Necromantic atmosphere, reminding me aesthetically to bands such as Mortuary Drape, Necromass among others. Their second album was pretty remarkable, and so it was their third one. Black Coven is the continuation of these, and more. Necromantic atmospheres enhanced by the use of eerie keyboards and even a saxophone, lyrics focused upon the traditional visions of medieval devil worship, ancient pagan grandeurs and the wanderings among catacombs and the macabre. All is here. This wouldn’t be much of a surprise if it wasn’t for the fact that they can actually compose extraordinary music which traps the listener and doesn’t let him go until the album ends. Medieval Demon are a veteran band, and if you didn’t pay attention to them back in the 90’s then I suggest you to do it now.
Mentors “Iluminaughty” CD
Self released
Alright, this is the new Mentors album after a few years of having released the previous one, called “Ducefixion”. This time, the drummer/vocalist Marc Duce is no longer in the band but Heathen Scum and Sickie have recruited a new drummer and a second guitarist. The vocals are still handled by Heathen Scum (bass) mainly although there are a few guests this time in order to give this album a little bit of variety in the vocal department, which is good.
To begin with, this album doesn’t sound like any previous album. Then again, this is good. Therefore it is understandable that the new members have contributed to the songwriting.
But anyway, and to be fair, most of the tracks here are good and here you’ll listen to some really amazing solos by courtesy of the all-time guitarist Sickie Wifebeater. Even if the lyrical department is not the best of what they have done, there is some quality stuff here.
The lyrics tend to be uninspired and even repetitive at some points but what the hell, I can live with that. As for the music, even if some tracks are really well written and performed, it isn’t hard to note that there are a few fillers as well. Some of the tracks do sound tired and uninspired, and the band could have left these out of the album easily.
This album comes in a gatefold cardboard sleeve, and with an incorrect trackilisting. But what really annoys me is the fact that this is just a cd-r, something unacceptable for a band with such a long trajectory.
All in all, it is a Mentors album and of course I do like it, even if it isn’t as solid as f.ex, Over the Top, which is by far the best album they’ve done without El Duce.

MGLA “Exercises in Futility” LP / CD
Northern Heritage.
I recall listening to this unknown band when I purchased a copy of the “Holy trinity…” 3 cd compilation, and honestly, I wasn’t interested in this band as in my opinion it sounded like a regular BM act with regular and uninspired riffing. But well, with due time, things may change; either they find their own sound or they simply fade away as a prospect of band. Fortunately, the second time that I listened to this band was when they released their 2013 effort “With hearts towards none”. And they sounded like an entirely different band. Their riffing was distinct and unique, with a sense of melody but at the same time the coldness offered on that compilation.
With “exercises of Futility”, they have even surpassed that album, which seemed to be a hard task to do indeed. This album is a natural progression to what the previous achieved a couple of years ago, and this is simply explained when a band reaches a point where they have achieved their own sound and their own soundwriting. The melodies and harmonies are still there, but this time the band seem to be even more relaxed when playing them, as they seem to flow more naturally this time.
As for the lyrics, I’d say that this album is a concept album in fact, as it shows, through 6 songs, that futility of life is ever present since the first question we do in life.
I have really liked this album, I think that it will be a hard job to surpass this one for the band, but if they have done that already, then it shouldn’t be a major problem. Buy!!
MGLA “Age of Excuse” LP/CD
Northern Heritage prod.
“Exercise of Futility” was an album which was some sort of rebirth for this band in the sense of self improvement and self exploration of sounds and compositions. That’s what I could perceive after comparing the gradual development of this band as their releases were coming and coming.
With “Age of Excuse”, the band not only have solidified their sound but also refined it. The foundations were set on the previous album, and here, they have polished everything even more.
“Age of Excuse” continues with the exploration of melodies and riffing with the basis of their earlier works, but they have put some intricacies to the whole formula.
Have you ever listened to their other project Kriegmaschine and the pessimism based on reality of human nature exposed there in? Granted, that project shares some similitudes in essence, but with MGLA they haven’t given themselves too much room for experimentation, unlike Kriegmaschine. But both share the pessimism for the futility of mankind’s existence, and how everything is failed from the very beginning. The melodies don’t serve as some mean of mass appeal, but some oppressive and asphyxiating settlement for the realities exposed through the lyrical concept. Each song is a part of a everything, they don’t need any title at all. I believe that if you approach to this band in a proper manner beyond any mundane analysis, you’ll grasp the true meaning and essence of this band’s whole work.
Misotheist s/t LP/CD
Terratur Possessions
This Norwegian label has been pushing the boundaries of a movement which all of us believed to be burned and banished. I mean the Norwegian Black Metal scene. It is no secret that all past glories have either disappeared or mutated into something unrecognizable, a shadow of their once good past. But it seems that Norwegian Black Metal is still there, underground, waiting and re-inventing itself with every new act presented. Misotheist is a literally unknown band. They have decided to keep it that way and due to the context spoken above, I think it is better in the sense that only their art will speak on their behalf. Here, they present their first effort which is basically a mini album consisting of three long tracks, not only exemplifying the nature of the nordic Black Metal of all, but they have also managed to add a personal seal and infuse it with a claustrophobic, sordid and punishing atmosphere. They have opted for a dirty and crushing production for this one unlike many new bands. I won’t describe each and every song here. But, the savage and melodic approach of their nordic sound is very distinguishable. They haven’t re-invented the wheel but have managed to inject a few personal touches to their music. This is a good start and surely a new album is in the making and should be available soon.
Moloch “Illusionen Eines verlorenen Lebens” CD / tape
Magistellus Infernal prod.
Well actually this is the tape version of this album originally released as cd during 2011 by Glorious north productions. Ok, briefly enough...this is a one man band coming from Ukraine and surprisingly has released a LOT of stuff since it was formed in 2002. Even so, this is the first thing I listen from this band. Basically what Moloch performs is a mix of dark ambient keyboard-oriented melodies with some sections which could be named as “depressive black metal”. And Moloch does it right I might add. The lyrics might complement the whole atmosphere, and they are some kind of poems dealing with nature and the parallels they have with darkness and personal emotional status. So, you might know already how does the music sound. The problem with this album is the very-much extended ambient sounds. They lead to nothing. And there are a couple scattered throughout this album. But other than that, Moloch does deliver a good dose of melodic and mid tempo depressive black metal, or dark ambien with some black metal spicing their sound. You name it.

Monadblot CD
MMP Temple prod.
MMP Temple is a label which produces music and sonic manifestations of projects related to the ONA, both being located in the United Kingdom.
Monadblot, being their first offering in Cd I do think, as the rest are tapes, is some kind of conceptual offering consisting in 2 sections or parts, and this term is related to an old term meaning the “month blood” or menstruation. However, being this a conceptual offering, it would be wise if this digipack would have included some text giving further details to this project, although, by the art included, it is easy to realize that they are establishing a tangible connection between the “month blood” and the lunar cycles related to this. Musically, this album reminds me somehow to the Deveril’s Nexion LP, “the sinister Tarot”. I say that there are similarities because both projects feature some field recorded sounds and some acoustic guitars, with the difference that Monadblot besides these ambience settings, also includes some synth work, additional vocal sections and a triumphant finale on later tracks. Everything combined does serve as a good meditative music setting first and foremost. If you have listened to some other ONA related musical projects, then you’ll realize that this one follows similar direction at least in the presented form.
Moonblood “From Hell” Boxset
Iron Bonehead prod.
Those familiar with Black metal from the 90’s, will know at least something about this obscure and extremely prolific German band, which, unfortunately, used to release their music in extremely limited quantities. Therefore, a lot of bootlegs appeared, many of them with poor sound and didn’t do justice to the band.
Well, at last a label decided to release properly a compilation in the way the band deserved it. Compiling everything the band recorded back then would be impossible as they recorded a lot of stuff. However, this is a “the best of” compilation, and for this titanic task, they have chosen carefully among many recordings. And I’d say that they have done a good job after all. Not only in researching among lots of recordings but also aesthetically. The sound restoring was also very good as well. Moonblood has always been a very talented band in the sense that most of their riffing are of high quality.
Moonblood “Winter falls over the land” LP /CD
Iron Bonehead prod.
Yes, after releasing the beast of a compilation “From hell” and the first album “blut & krieg”, this german label blessed the Moonblood fans once more by releasing this MLP, which contains actually 2 rehearsals/demos (sideA: Gates of Eternity” and side B: “Winter falls upon the land”), which couldn’t be included on the boxset but deserved to be released anyway as this is some of the best material that this prolific band wrote back in the days.
These recordings were mastered once again by Patrick Engel who took care of the boxset as well. The quality is flawless, and the aesthetics fit the cold nature of these recordings very well. On the cd, they have included additional material as the whole cd playing time is 1 hour.
Moonblood is classic German BM, an influence and a band which didn’t deserve to be forgotten.
MoonReich “Pillars of Detest” CD
Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions.
I must admit that this is the first time that I listen to this french band, even if this is their third album so far. I knew them by name, and that was all. And they must be pretty big up there, as this time their album has been mastered at Endarker studios (Sweden, owned by Devo Anderson- Marduk). And this fact is understandable, as this band seem to follow a similar path with their Swedish colleagues, at least in aesthetic, and I’d even adventure to say lyrical approach as well (damn, I don’t know why, lyrics aren’t even included in this well looking digipack, but I managed to understand a few lines at least).
After listening to the album, I got the impression that MoonReich is a band which followed the path of traditional Black Metal and now it is experimenting with more progressive influences. I wouldn’t say that this a bad thing, though, but experimenting “too much” would leave aside the original perspective of the band, and, to my own taste, leaving aside darkness and oppression in their music in favor to a more complicated and “mathematic” oriented music. But all in all, this album still retains some black metal elements which keeps my attention during the course of the album.
Morbid “Year of the Goat” 3LP / 2CD
Century Media Recs.
Well you already know Morbid and Dead. Everybody does. So, what then? This is an official tribute to the band with “charitable” intentions? (sic). Compiled by no other than metalion with the help of Eric D. (Watain) who did an splendid layout, and perhaps that’s the reason of why many will be buying it in the first place.
In that sense, I’m being practical and have opted for the CD which is basically the same.
Here, there’s nothing really “new”: the December Moon demo is here (and for that sake the only interesting demo by the way), a rehearsal is also present, and of course 3 shows from the “year of the goat:1987” were included as well. Even if the overall sound was taken from the original sources and has been totally re-mastered, it retains the whole rawness and amateurish sound of a band which never surpassed the demo era but was an obvious influence for the upcomind and typical sound of Swedish Death Metal. Even if the material presented here is nothing new, the memory of Morbid and Dead have been immortalized once and for all. Make your choice, and act fast!
Mors Vincit Per Saeculum 4 way split cd
Cadaver/Evoked Terror/Ad Terrorem/Embalmed Corpse
Necronausea records
This would be, if I’m not mistaken, the second 4 way split released by this Peruvian label, whose owner participates with his own project Ad Terrorem.
As for the music itself: This 4 way split is quite irregular regarding the quality of the bands presented here. You may find one amateurish band which is still struggling to find their way to develop their own sound in death metal (Cadaver that is), but at least they managed to present two good cover songs, from Hadez and Mortuorio respectively.
The next band, Evoked Terror, that is, is in fact not new as they have release previous stuff through the local label Crypts of Eternity. What they present here if their demo from 2012 “Rise upon unholy Darkness”, spicing it with a Celtic frost cover. So far they have released a second demo and a 4 way split 7”Ep. Anyway, their early recording shows their take of primitive, raw and dirty death metal. To my ears, this is nothing special but anyway it is way batter than many of the bands which just record a few tracks and then die.
Ad Terrorem only released 2 demos, being this one the first. Even if this is only a 3 tracks demo, being one of them a cover track, this band demonstrate experience in composing and playing songs, and technically are quite superior to the rest of the bands. I don’t know why they quit after 2 demos, but their death metal would have developed pretty smoothly on future releases.
And closing this split come Embalmed Corpse, which is another old school death metal act even if they are a new band. This recording being their only demo from 2018 “From the Morgue”. I would say that they develop a good, interesting and raw approach to the roots from the genre. Obsessed by as they call it, Death itself, this demo exudes darkness and stench even if it’s not original.
All in all this is an interesting split done for the listener to listen to the new generation of local death metal.
Mortem “Demonolatry” 2CD
Veins Full of Wrath records.
Ok, it was about time for this one to be released after many years of waiting. For those who doesn’t know by now, this compilation was going to be released originally by Legion of Death records (FRA), but after all Mortem decided to do it through this young Chilean label, first on CD and later on 2LP.
Well, to the point: At last the demos have been officially re-released for those who hadn’t the chance to get them when they were released on tape. And I must say that, thankfully the original sound and therefore the original recording mistakes were left almost intact. Only the overall sound was cleaned up a little bit and boosted, and that’s all. So, the basic intention, of just compiling and releasing the demos properly was achieved. BUT, and I must say this, being this compilation such an historical release, some liner notes written by the band were mandatory, for those interested in knowing more about the history of the demos themselves. Unfortunately the label was more focused into publishing as many photos as the booklet allowed, and that’s indeed the main disadvantage.
About the demos: I have always thought that the first one,Evil Dead, was the best representation of Mortem’s old sound. Pure and simple. Even the second demo, which was more polished and continued in the same vein, portrayed how a bad production can ruin a release. Superstition just sounds too sterile, light and hollow. And the cavernous voice of the previous demo was now gone.
After listening again the third and fourth demos, now I can remember why I refused to purchase them when they were out: Their old influences were almost deleted by the fact that Mortem had been influenced by Deicide, a band I never could get into. Vomit of the Earth just sounds too “modern” for Mortem, with that terrible vocal distortion and those incipient blast beats. The follow up demo tape, wanted to continue in that direction, not only including new songs, but also “converting” old songs into that new found sound. Even the debut album (at least side B) still reeks of these influences. Anyway, here the label included as a bonus the originally released on vinyl mini album “devoted to evil” which is a nice addition, but of course won’t be included in the forthcoming vinyl edition.
All in all, a big effort for this label, and a mandatory purchase for those recently accustomed to Mortem’s music, and also for those who owned the demos on tape but needed a fresh reminder of those old times.
Mortem “Deinós Nekromantis” LP/CD
Iron Pegasus records
After a few years of being dormant, or better said, dreaming but dead, the long standing Peruvian death metal veterans Mortem at last release an new offering to the audience hungry for death.
Ok, I won’t go into details regarding this album, in fact I never do, but I’ll let you know what to expect when listening to this new album.
First of all, it is a Mortem album, that should be enough for you to purchase if you haven’t listened to them yet (and I think you did!). With this statement, it should be very clear by now that this band are not taking any risk by adventuring into new grounds when composing and performing music. They know what do their audience expect from an album of theirs, and so they go ahead and simply release another album with their already known sound and already known influences, which are basically Slayer, Possessed, Sacrifice, Death, early Dark Angel.
Although on this particular record I can notice an stronger influence from early Morbid Angel and that would be the main difference between this album and the previous ones. Also, I have noticed that on this album they have started to give small hints of already recorded songs. I mean, there must be a reason for doing this, and not simply trying to repeat themselves over and over. I do think that they are not trying to record again and again the same album but give a new perspective of their already known sound and influences.
I do find odd, however, is the reason as to why they have named the album after what is basically an intro for the Venom Cover (odd choice for a cover I should say, at least for Mortem!).
Ok, you have listened to Mortem before, so you should already know what to expect from another album, so it’s safe for you to buy this one as well.
Mortem “Daemonium Vobiscum” CD
Unnoficial bootleg
Ah, I wonder what’s the point in reviewing a bootleg, but anyway, this cd is for those Mortem fans who haven’t had the chance to buy a copy of those scarce official cds, or perhaps are wanting for more live stuff.
This cd compiles 3 shows dating from the late 90’s, two from 1997 and 3 songs from 1998.
As for the sound, well, they were recorded with a hand recording unit so you may expect a very raw sound, background noises and all what you could expect from recordings such as these. Honestly, due to the sound quality of these recordings, being the first show the worst, I could recommend this release to those die hard Mortem fans only. Anyway, they capture the atmosphere of +20 year old shows and perhaps that’s the intention of releasing this in the first place. The presentation is quite good I think, with lot of flyers coming from that era, photos and some additional collage which is fine.
Mortuus “Diablerie” LP/CD
W.T. Committee
“We turn our backs to the Fire and walk into the Dark”…
With Diablerie, this Swedish Black Metal band would consolidate themselves as those who do not look forward to release an album to keep their quota of music intact and relevant. They have proven, with their second album that they do release music when it is needed, when inspiration is strong enough to infest with a new album, in the same vein as a basis but also as a unique beast of its own, able to breath and tell its history, for those who allow the band to do it of course. You know, with internet came the gratifying and never ending taste of music at the reach of one click, but also came the search for fast gratification. Diablerie is a completely different experience, and if you are looking for the former, then look somewhere else. Mortuus demands the listener to actually sit with the album with a proper mood and proper contemplation. Diablerie doesn’t offer instant gratification. You need the album to awake, and breath, and expand, and with that infesting and dragging the listener into the dark and malignancy of the inhuman perception of diablerie. The songs offered are long, the riffs are repetitive but little by little the layers and enhancing elements appear, adding to the whole, and like a beast; breathing, roaring, engulfing. And once you realize, the album is done and the essence of the concept of diablerie swallowed. Songs are not presented simply as such, they are built, they surround the listener and drag him into a down spiral of black inhumanities. Mortuss have managed to create an album in the vein of the previous ones as a basis, but taking advantages of the mid tempo riffing as a medium to construct something else, something which only those with the necessary contemplation will be able to discern. And therefore, the band have studied, expanded, and mastered their own sound.
Mudra “One Look Beyond” CD
Egregor Producciones
From the southern lands of Peru, comes this experienced Melodic Thrash Metal band with a few full lengths under their belt. This is their last effort and I’d say that with this album, they have consolidated as one of the best local thrash bands out there. Strong and clear sounding production, technical tracks and a style with heavy influence from Sepultura’s Beneath the remains from which a few riffs were borrowed, and mixed together with heavy metal riffings here and there, basically from Iron Maiden I could say. Ok, the music is not that original, but the technical level achieved is quite remarkable. The vocals are quite high pitched and that would say it is the weakest point of the album to my own liking. But anyway, the album itself is quite good for what it is and I do recognize it their trajectory and contribution to the local thrash metal legacy.

Murder Junkies “Killing for Christ Sakes” LP / CD
MVD Audio.
It seems that the band became pretty active as they keep releasing albums every year and touring constantly. This is the third album with the new established line up. The point is, they did a good job with Killing Tradition. I mean, those were songs composed over the years which were just re-recorded for the occasion. Now, as they’re releasing new material and composing new songs, they’re trying to achieve what they did with Killing Tradition. But they just can’t. I do think that their songs have become quite predictable and they’re copying themselves. I still do enjoy their songs though. But I do still prefer the production shown on Killing tradition, which is rawer. Now they sound too “Crystal clear”, which doesn’t fit to their dirty style of punk rock. Anyway, i’d still listen to this instead of a lot of crappy punk metal albums released nowadays.
Mysticum “Planet Satan” LP / CD
Peaceville records.
A lot can be said about Mysticum and their never ending preparation of this album, which took forever to be released. As a matter of fact, I don’t think that Planet Satan has been in preparation for such a long time. No, it is just that the band was forever on hold, and, as they managed to resurrect it, then they decided to finally record this album (and most likely compose it as well!). Ok, Planet Satan sounds like it should sound. Perhaps a little simpler when comparing it to their classic “In the streams…”, but I do think , however, that it serves their purpose well. Their typical riffing is there, their inhuman sounding programmed drums is there, etc etc. Yes, their arrangements perhaps are quite lazy this time, but all in all there are a couple of memorable songs to be found here, and this I’m satisfied with it. Perhaps this time they won’t take forever to release another album. So, in the end “Planet Satan” is just a decent album and that’s all I can say.
Nachtgeblüt “Dying Echoes of a Past Forlorn” CD
Dark Hidden prod.
It is amazing how a given project or band can develop itself to a point of being surprisingly coherent and at the same prolific. Alternating classical music with Metal is something that many bands have trying to do in the past. Some have succeeded, some other haven’t.
Even if active since the year 2001, this solo project involving an active member of other BM projects in Argentina, has remained pure and unique to what it has been gestating since the release of the first album “Frozen Streams…” released in 2002.
“Dying Echoes…” is a mature album and it is the result of a constant development and ward work. Even if the previous album released in the year 2005 and called “Strange ways…” showed perfectly the development towards a mixture and complement between classical compositions and Black Metal, it is here, on this current album “Dying Echoes…” that the only member Eviigne has managed to create something not only technically competent, but also a soulful and solemn album.
This time as well, the album comes graced with different preludes and interludes which are interpretations of different classical composers, and which serve as a mood setting for the classically inspired black metal. Here, classical music merges with the melodic brand of black metal. The songs themselves are pretty long, they are intended to be this way, and in this length they develop themselves to the point of becoming one with their classical influences which serve as a perfect framework for the meditative and nostalgic nature of the lyrics. Do I need to say more? Dark Hidden prod from Argentina has been releasing quality stuff and I’ve found this one to be especially interesting and well crafted.
Necros Christos “Nine Graves” LP/CD
Van Records.
Alright, this is a new mini album even if it’s more than 40 minutes long. And this new mini album features 4 songs, 2 of which are re-recorded songs featured on the demos, with the respective interludes or “temples” and a long acoustic interlude or “gate”. The point here is, Necros Christos have left aside the western musical influences when concerned to their temples or “gates” as it was shown on their previous album, giving place to an eastern Persian musical influence, as shown f.ex on this “gate”. It is understandable, as the singer / guitarist plays in a eastern influenced project as well. Anyway, as for the music itself, Their brand of death doom metal is still here, although the production sounds cleaner this time. Necros Christos know where they’re heading as a musical entity, that’s for sure. If you have listened to their previous album “doom of the occult” and enjoyed the whole journey even with the interludes, then you’ll like this one too.
Necros Christos “Domedon Doxomedon” 3cd/3LP
Sepulchral Voice.
Third and final album from Necros Christos. It is well known that this band desired to arrange every album and set of demos and number of albums as triads, that is, in groups of three, and this album certainly follows the same patterns. This 2 hour long album has been arranged on a 3 discs set, each disc named after each cross on the Golgotha. Each disc also, features three tracks, accompanied with three Gates and three temples, that is, each track works together with one intro and one outro.
Having noticed this, it also to be said that unfortunately this time “Domedon…” doesn’t have the same flow which previous efforts presented. For the very first time I found myself skipping intros and outros, and I do think that they do not contribute to the flowing and progression of the album in the same way that they did on the first album. After all, there are nothing less that 9 temples and 9 gates. Unfortunately, they do offer almost nothing to the album itself rather than just filling the need of including them there in.
As for the real songs, I must say that Necros Christos has changed with time. First of all, the production is clearer, the songs are longer and they could have worked perfectly if they were just shorter. The atmosphere, due to the new lyrical direction, has also changed the necromantic vibe of all previous efforts. Unfortunately, the band is now interested in Gnostic Christianity and Hebraic Kabbalah. Therefore, those lyrics just kill the atmosphere of the album. The only thing I could be interested in, is the disposition of some clever riffing which makes me remember the greatness of good old Necros Christos. For the rest, this album is the weakest of all three.
NEDXXX- S/t LP/CD
Norma Evangelium Diaboli.
There are many ways to experience and listening to albums and everything depends on the perspective established by the band and how the listeners do understand and perceive that given album.
This is one of the albums that doesn’t offer what any common listener would expect from a black metal record. This is not a mere experience which could be taken as superfluous and mundane, considering the given elements and the offered conditions.
NEDXXX (which in fact is an anonymous project and unnamed project with associates and some individuals related to NED in some way or another) is a unique listening experience as it is an experimental project which doesn’t need a name, only a concept and the ability of the artists to recreate that experience for the listeners to grasp. In such a way, and under those premises, this album will leave many listeners without knowing how to react to it, without even the ability to comprehend it under their understanding of music as such. I’m not a musician myself, and I’m pretty sure that this album wasn’t made with the idea of analyzing it in such a way.
“Everything began with darkness and with darkness it will end”.
Having that in mind, this record mirrors the primordial chaos and darkness and from there explores the nature of the creation as such, including mankind and its murderous nature which belongs to the Devil and the Diabolic, even if man desires it so or not.
This album has been tracked into 8 different tracks. Perhaps it has been done in such a way for practical reasons, but it is of no use really, as the whole record works as one complete listening experience. It can’t be “disrupted”, even if, as the voice complementing the music explains, the “Diabolic” disrupts. It just is! It develops itself through the chaos where it was spawned from, through diverse corridors and instances where it is left clear that the Devil is the active force from which everything develops, beyond mere mundane set of morals and reasons.
There are a few musical elements which could be recognized from known sources. Perhaps that’s intentional, or perhaps they are just hints? But the whole album reflects the chaotic vortex which eventually will swallow everything in its path until it is depleted again. In such a way, I’m not even trying to dissect the sound. I take it as one of the many elements present which will give form to the whole experience beyond possible understanding and eventually leaving me with a sense of emptiness and despair.
Listen to it and delve into the chaos and disruption of the Devil.
Nifelheim “Envoy of Lucifer” LP/CD
Regain Records.
I know that this album has been released some time ago, but, after all, Nifelheim is not a band that releases albums that frequently!
Well, surely you have heard Nifelheim before, so I’ll go to the point: this album, is not that different from the rest of their discography. Their essence remains almost the same, perhaps with more influences of their well known affection for Iron Maiden’s music. And I like it. Perhaps this obvious influence may sound weird (if that’s the correct term!) at some points, but this fact is nothing new in Nifelheim. Allright, you know how the songs are going to sound, and how they’ll be arranged and executed, but this fact don’t diminish the force and passion showed throughout the entire album. What else? Get this!
Nästrond “Muspellz Synir” CD
Debemur Morti prod.
When Nästrond released their debut “Toteslaut” moe than 10 years ago, I was totally hooked to their unique brand of Black Metal, and surely this band was among the best of Napalm recs arsenal. After the release of their second album, the band seemed to disappear. They didn’t split up, but obviously kept a very low profile. And, a couple of years ago they released an split 10’’LP with the Swedish Myrkr, as a prelude to this album, which, was finally unleashed through the French label Debemur Morti.
Nästrond’s kind of black metal is unique in the sense that all of their albums display an asphyxiating and freezing atmosphere, which of course is present throughout this album as well. The production is “sterile”, and “colder” when compared to their previous albums, but I think this is good, and it really adds a lot to the journey through dark lore they are trying to portray. I won’t go into any further details here, as Nästrond is an experience that you’ll have to face alone. Buy this.

Nocturnal Hollow « Decay of Darkness » CD
Necronausea records
I came across this band just recently. Probably because they haven’t been very well distributed even if they have a couple of albums out. Well, in any case, the local label Necronausea records have re-released their first full length. Ok, let’s see : what Nocturnal Hollow are playing is nothing less that old school death metal very influenced by the old Swedish scene, and executed mostly in mid tempo. That would be the overall description. No, they’re not copycats. They assimilate those infleunces and turn them into something creative, even primitively composed at times but, all in all, they show the basic and raw elements which mix power and melody through the songs.
Listening to this band has been a fresh relief honestly, I never thought that Venezuela was producing bands of this caliber. Recomended !!!

Nocturnal Vomit « Cursed Relics » LP/CD
Kill Yourself prod / Terror from Hell recs
I’ve been in contact with this band since they released their « Infernal Ascencion of the Gods » demo, and since then, have been following through their entire set of demos and 7’eps. The band was good, perhaps a little too rough and primitive but that was their essence and what made them attractive. However, this album surprised me in a good way because , even if it is an old school death metal album, the music and the compositions show a big progression, in sound and song writting. As far as I know, even a proper production has been made for this album, analogue which suits the nature of this old school death metal band perfectly.
I won’t compare this to any band even if it clearly shows obvious influences, all I will say is that not many bands nowadays can achieve to capture the essence of death and putrefaction through a sound which reeks of old and putrefaction…too bad that the band have split up after this masterpiece…
Nocturno « La noche de los tiempos » CD
Espiritus Inmundos/Pentagram recs/Toxico prod.
After the release of the demo tape, at last this local doom metal band release their debut album under the cooperation of three different local labels, which is quite odd but anyway.
Honestly, this is the first time that I manage to listen to this band in full and with proper attention and care as before I had watched them live which is a completely different experience. First of all, Nocturno is the first band of this kind which is completely instrumental, that is, they depend completely on their music to create the atmospheres related to every song title, nd this is, in fact, a quite interesting and unique perspective of presenting a band.
This album has been divided, to my own understanting, into 2 different but complementary sections, divided by an acoustic interlude. This is useful, idf you want to listen to this album in two different sessions without spoiling the natural flow of the album itself. Basically, wht we have here is a doom metal band, influenced basically by Black Sabbath and Hellhammer…perhaps some others as well, with long songs structured with the conjunction of complementary riffs which serve to create a unique kind of atmosphere. Even if some songs may appear as sinous and quite tedious to listen to, most of them do not follow an specific pattern and are quite varied and complemented by unexpected solos. This pattern goes for the majority of songs, with the exception of « Anticosmos », which shows a more punkish and faster riffing.
Did they suceed with this formula ? I do think that they did indeed, but this creation of atmospheres must be experienced only by studying their sound and analyzing their music. At least that’s how it has worked for me.

Nosferatum “Gritos de Muerte” CD
Necronausea records.
Nosferatum is one of those bands which were spawned during the early 90’s in Lima-Peru, but for some reason never got the chance to be properly distributed. I can understand that the local scene back then was precarious and the bands with little resources never had the chance to record a proper demo nor have proper distribution. And this the case with this band at least partially.
What we have here is basically a compilation consisting of their only demo (which is in fact a rehearsal demo), plus some additional rehearsal and some live tracks as bonus. And I say partially, because Nosferatum may have been a band with limited resources, but also they were an amateurish band which were just learning how to play their instruments. Their death thrash oriented songs are quite simple in structure and feature some precarious soloing, and their demo doesn’t sound tight at all. But I guess it was for what it was: a garage band which re just starting to play. As for the bonus tracks, the rehearsal tracks do sound pretty average but they do their job, I guess. The live footage shouldn’t have been included not even as a gift, as it sounds atrocious.
This release serves its purpose, by showing a rarity of a band born in Lima Peru, and sadly was deceased at their early stage.

Nunslaughter “Angelic Dread” 2CD / 2LP
Hells headbangers records.
Being a long time Nunslaughter fan, I was waiting anxiously for this new album, which turned out to be a double surprise as it was done as a double LP/CD.
Ok, I won’t go into details regarding this band. Everyone into death metal should recognise them as one of the oldest and influential bands coming from the US. These veterans know how to compose and perform their brand of “devil metal” well, by keeping their sound minimalistic, primitive and above all, catchy.
The first LP/CD features a bunch of new tracks of devil metal splendour. Many will say that this band kept repeating themselves over and over but I have to disagree. They know how death metal should sound properly by assimilating the correct influences and applying to their own sound.
On the second disc, they wanted to please their fans by re-recording special tracks only found on 7’eps, but with the new production. I don’t really know if this is a good move specially for the fans who already have bought their 7’eps. Or anyway, as the compilation series called “Devil congeries” is out collecting all previous 7’eps, on both CD and LP, I don’t really know if these re-recording were necessary to be included as a part of the album.
Anyway, it’s Nunslaughter, therefore it is a must!
Nunslaughter “The Devil’s Congeries Vol 1 & 2” 2 LP / 2cd
Hells headbangers records
Anybody familiar with Hells headbangers will surely know that this label take extra care of Nunslaughter in every possible way. And of course, these releases were going to happen no matter what. You know, all those limited editions 7eps couldn’t be forgiven or left behind as they’re the most important part for a band like this, whose main discography consists of exclusively a long catalogue of 7’eps.
The Devil’s Congeries (yes, I’m reviewing both volumes released so far) are some must have compilations of these long lost 7’eps, released in alphabetical order. I would have preferred having these released on their original format, exact replicas but then again you can’t have it all. I do own a few of these 7eps actually but obviously not all. So, buying these volumes was a necessary thing to do actually. The label could have added some extra layout with the full design of these 7eps and not only the covers. Also, the cd editions come with additional live footage, so these volumes are winners.
Nunslaughter “The Devil’s Congeries Vol 3” 2LP / 2CD-1DVD
Hells headbangers records.
And here it is at last the third installment of a mandatory compilation that reunites all 7Eps with exclusive content from this notorious band. I know that many out there surely possess a few Eps here and there, but let’s be honest here: collecting everything from this band is almost impossible. Most of us just have bought their full lengths, a few splits and some 7Eps. And it is here when the importance of this compilation series manifests.
This particular volume collects eps and splits from 2003 to 2006. And there’s more to cover really, so we should expect additional volumes in the future. Most of the material presented herein is exclusive, so there’s no excuse for not getting it.
As usual, the vinyl edition presents all EPs. But this time, for the cd edition, they have added on a second cd all EPS from their Metal Assault on Australia. All of them. And moreover, they have added a bonus dvd with their now out of print Metal Assault on Australia. So there’s no excuse really. The price is pretty cheap for what they’re offering, don’t let it pass again.
Nyogthaeblisz “Apex Satanist” LP / CD
Iron Bonehead prod.
I’m not very sure about the nature of this compilation. It is supposed to be a demo compilation, although by judging from the list of tracks, they must be new songs ready to be recorded properly. Anyway, after listening their previous compilation (which has been released on both cd and lp) I was expecting them to sound similar. In such a way, I was quite right. The band still sounds pretty chaotic and unintelligible and therefore they have succeeded. On the other hand, it seems that these demos have been recorded using an electronic drum machine. Perhaps, this was their intention as these tracks do sound pretty unnatural and industrial. This additional touch served as an additional purpose as well: to turn everything into a chaotic mess. On the other hand, I would have preferred a natural sounding drum.
Anyway, this compilation is pretty short for a full length, and on the LP version the tracks are exactly the same on both sides.
Nyogthaeblisz “Abrahamic Godhead Besieged by Adversarial Usurpation” LP/CD
Hells Headbangers prod.
There are different paths a band can take after working on their concept and sound with the years. When the band released their early material, it was clear the original approach they were taking in terms of music and concept. With “Progenitors of mankind’s Annihilation” the band was clearly established as a chaotic approach but with parameters already established within the War/death metal department. Even if their essence was clouded with a noisy vocal approach and the riffs tried to be hidden in the whole mix, it was obvious that they were listenable and took part of the whole equation. As they were progressing with further releases, a noisier approach took a protagonist stance. That was especially noticeable on their “Apocryphal Precursor” EP.
After many years, the band was ready to record finally their album which shows a purified version of all their years of experience and a solidified vision. “Abrahamic Godhead…” shows a refined, chaotic and yet controlled noisier version of Nyogthaeblisz. And also shows the inclusion of subtle electronic elements which adds new layers of sound to the whole brutality. And if on earlier releases they were trying to hide their guitar-work, or at least that’s what it looked like, with album they have succeeded in a way that even with this result, the album doesn’t lose essence and resolution, and ignites the thirst for additional listenings.
Their lyrical department continues to systematically expand with every release, and if you’re familiar with this band, you’ll understand that it has grown exponentially and with the same purpose as with the music/sonic assault. I won’t comment more about the subject as in this particular case, it’s useless.
Everything with this album has got a purpose and everything works accordingly. Even if you don’t enjoy these kind of bands, but the ferociousness of War Metal, I believe that you’ll end up appreciating this album.
“Of Devil’s Arts & Magic” 6way split
Zazen Sounds
This release caught especially my attention because of the bands involved and the quality present in these offerings. Look, upon first sight, I thought that this 6 way split consisted on randomly chosen bands, but I was wrong and you should know why after examining this CD. All of the presented bands, are Greek to begin with and all of them present different levels of involvement within their Black Metal scene. But all of them present a very high potential in what they do and keep the level of this split consistent all the way through.
Blood Moon is a great opener with their brand of melodic yet dense Black Metal and set the level for the whole split. The follow up band , Devathorn are veterans within their scene even if they have only managed to release a couple of albums and a few split within the 18 years of existence.
Shibalba would be the only band that places an ambient ritual pace for this split, and should not need introduction. Their hymn to the Solar Deity RA is, as usual, mesmerizing and immersive for what is to come. To my own preference, the strong pillar of this album comes from Wampyrinacht with their brand of old school Hellenic black metal infused with a strong sense of melody and complexity. The young band Haxandraok would follow, with just one album under their belt, would show how well a crafted infusing of melodic black metal and ritual can be achieved.
This would close with the Hellenic Veterans Acherontas, with of course the participation of some of the musicians previously involved. What else could I say?. This is a very well thought release, and should be of interest for those interested in the diverse manifestations of Hellenic Black metal.
Ofermod « Tiamtú » CD/LP
Norma Evangelium Diaboli / Ajna
I’ve received this as a promo and already have somehow mixed feelings about the album. But to be honest, I don’t really know the reason of the hype surrounding this band. Tiamtú sounds average musically in terms of Black metal per se, although I appreciate the Death metal remembrances they offer in some of their riffs, influenced by the heavy Morbid Angel. After all, the album deals with Death anyway. The lyrics continue to be alien, focused upon Yiddish “mythology”- their vision beyond death- and Qliphotic studies, which become quite irritating and they ruin the whole listening experience. At least for me.
To be honest, this album doesn’t reflect what the members desperatedly try to communicate at any cost.

Ohtar “Euthanasia of Existence” CD
Deathrune records
This is a heavy weight black metal band from Poland. And this is nothing less than their fourth full album among a fructiferous career.
Ohtar have always been a rarity within the Polish Black metal scene, because it started as a nationalist and white power oriented black metal band, but with due time, mixed their concept with more dramatic and asphyxiating thematic, centered upon the futility of human being’s existence, sickness and death. Quite a difference indeed.
And the music, yes, indeed it captures very well the “claustrophobic”, and asphyxiating nature of the lyrics, as it is heavy, complex, well structured and very much composed upon a variety of original riffing. Yes, it is quite strange that a band which started during the 90’s with a thematicx recurrent within the Polish scene, have departed in such a way throughout the years. Yes, they have found their own sound and lyrical approach, and as they state themselves in one of their songs: have we lost inspiration??? I wouldn’t say that, but perhaps if they continue on the same path, sooner or later they will. At least lyrically.
Old Tower “The Rise of the Spectral Horizons” 2CD
Profound Lore records.
Well, this particular release consists of two full length recordings which were available on a limited edition, on both, tape and vinyl. So, after all it is a good thing to have this released as a full length effort for those interested. These recordings are titled “Spectral Horizons” and what would become the debut album called “The Rise of the Specter”.
There’s a posterior full length also released by this label called “Stellary Wisdom” as well which continues to the work established by these 2 early works.
Basically, this double CD documents 2 early works of Old Tower, which serves the foundation to the concept established for future releases, including the already released album “Stellary Wisdom” so it was a good move to have these available again.
There are previous recordings released only as tape as well, but these are considered as standalone releases and have nothing to do with Old Tower’s concept.
What’s interesting here is that Old Tower in a certain way develops the early sound established by Mortiis and whose influences seem to be certainly there but with a proper approach which seems mostly focused into the atmosphere created instead of the musical structure itself. So, there are hints of music but developed with the creation of a proper atmosphere.
Old Tower would work for those interested in Mortiis’ early material, and therefore for all those interested in Black Metal to a certain extent. Together with Thangorodrim, this is one of the very few projects named as “Dark Dungeon Synth” which are actually valuable and have something to say.
Omenfilth “Hymns of Diabolical Treachery” CD
Nero One records/Espiritus Inmundos prod.
This would be the second álbum of this Filipino band formed by members of the local Pathogen. However, there’s another album which has been released at the time that the Peruvian label Espiritus Inmundos released this album, so there’s actually 2 versions of this. Nero one records released a very limited digipack so the standard version would be that of Espiritus Inmundos.
Well what can I say about this band?. I’m not familiar with Pathogen but this project is focused in the Death black department, with some reminiscences of old Angel Corpse and very straight forward musical approach, with reminiscences of black metal.
I don’t know if I could properly describe this album as a full length, as they have included only 4 proper tracks with a running time of 20 minutes, and then the 5th track consists of a very long piece (26 minutes)which could be described as a dissonant track which reminded me very much to old Abruptum, not music in the sense of their previous tracks but something more which could serve as a media for setting a disturbing atmosphere. Guitar, vocals, drum patterns and chaos. I don’t know what’s the real purpose of this track, but well… should you get this album? I think so, at least for the first four tracks.

Ordinance “Relinquishment” CD / 2LP
A-Aihio prod.
From time to time you discover one of those albums which simply stay away from the rest of any scene or particular sound. Ordinance is a band which took nothing less than 7 years in order to complete their debut album, and certainly, this is a tortuous listening indeed. Relinquishment features 9 tracks of black metal with a sense of desolation, despair and almost a great dose of melodies exemplified not only by their Black Metal oriented riffings, but also through the acoustic passages scattered across the album, and even the inclusion of hard rock soloing. Definitedly there are a great deal of different musical inclusions which could raise more than one eyebrow on a genre purist, but the result itself is what counts after all. This is an album whose sense of abandonment and despair is very good portrayed and very well complemented with those almost muttered / whispered vocals. As for the lyrics themselves, well the topics will be very well discussed on the interview with the band, but, let me tell you that indeed they differ a great deal from the typical and generic black metal band out there. And that is an accomplishment. I won’t add nothing more to an album which should be experienced instead of just briefly commented. But certainly, if you know what to expect within a genre oversaturated with copycats, then you’ll know instantly after discovering a n act worthy of attention.
Ordinance “In Purge there’s no remission” LP/CD
Sinister Flame recs.
After listening to their previous and debut album, I just could only wonder how a band like this could develop without losing their essence and at the same time contributing with new elements to their already established sound. “In Purge there’s no remission” is an album which drinks from a few black metal sources which have contributed to what Black Metal is nowadays, but at the same time, they have added new elements which enhance the nature of this particular work which is soaked in despair, nothingness and conflict between the nature of the divine and the terrenal. However, occasionally you may find a moment or two of lucid grandeur which works in juxtaposition to the abrasive lyrical declamation.
Ordinance have soaked themselves into the sound influential bands and you’ll find easily recognized elements from there. But, at the same time, have managed to add the necessary elements wrapped in melodic outburst with will give you the sense and atmosphere which was ever present also on their debut album.
“The only upward slope are the stairs towards the gallows”. And everything, in the end, is leading into the abyss without a mere glance of salvation, and even luminosity, which is timidly displayed as failed births throughout this album.
Orgy of Flies s/t CD
Necronausea records.
Ok well what we have here is a re-edition containing the demo from this now defunct Brazillian death metal band and a previous rehearsal, which contains basically the same tracks.
Orgy of Flies basically play a “south-americanized” version of a raw and primitive kind of death metal. That is, death metal influenced by old Brazilian bands. I should make a comparison between both, the demo (which is described on this release as a full album) and the rehearsal. Let’s see, this band is the perfect example as to why the production can kill or enhance a band’s performance and overall sound. The demo / album here sounds polished and pretty clear sounding, but unfortunately this kind of production doesn’t work for a band like Orgy of Flies, which needs a rawer and diertier production in order to enhance their possibilities. And that’s the reason of why I will continue listening to the Fuckin’ rehearsal. The tracks do simply sound significantly better and it suits perfectly to the style of the band.
On a side note, the label has done a pretty good job with this particular release, by including an A5 sized “zine” containing lyrics, photos and an interview which will serve the listeners to know something more about this now – not-so-obscure Brazilian death metal act.

Orgy of Flies / Ancestral Terror split CD
“Bacchanals of Horror” Necronausea recs.
After the release of their one and only album together with the first demo as a bonus, Necronausea releases the second demo from the Brazilian Orgy of Flies, entitled “Death Warriors”, very much in the vein of the first demo but a little bit more “mature”, but also displaying their brand of old school death metal with a Brazilian school.
As for Ancestral Terror, they are also a Brazilian death metal act, and this band has been a good companionship for Orgy of Flies, as their style and approach of death metal is pretty similar, even if they’re already on hold and this is their only demo originally released during 2006.
As for the label, they have had a clever idea regarding the aesthetic of this release: being an split, they have created a common cover art, and inside of the case, they have added an completely new cover, featuring the original artwork for both bands, including of course photos and lyrics. In such a way, they have solved a basic problem presented when doing splits.
Ok, all in all, the choice of bands is good, the layout and presentation for both bands is accurate and you should support these bands and this local label.

Orthodoxy “Novus Lux Dominus” LP/CD
Sinister Flame prod.
It is quite interesting to notice how a band can develop and mature properly when it is fueled with proper dedication and a solidified vision. Spanish Death Metal quartet Orthodoxy is a living proof of this collective channeling into something even greater. They started as a one man project. The demo tape, while possessing still certain ties to black metal and a certain scent of another project already known called Domains.
For some reason the sole member decided to turn Orthodoxy into a quartet. The result of this collaboration and collective vision is this this album. The result is not only more mature, but also more rotten and pestilent. The sound when compared to the demo has properly developed into a more bizarre, sluggish and certainly influenced by the slimy side of Morbid Angel without losing their own identity. This mid tempo and doomy riffings are complemented by outburst of collective aggression and fastness which enhance the nature of the songs and their connection with the pestilential manifestation of the acausal darkness they are trying to mirror with their lyrics.
Thing is: there are many bands out there which call themselves death metal but which manifest anything but the repulsive stench of death and darkness. Orthodoxy know how to manifest it through their compositions. Do yourself a favor and get this album.
Orthodoxy “Ater Ignis” LP/CD
Sinister Flame recs.
Second full length album after the excellent debut “novus Lux…”, also reviews in this publication. It is interesting to follow the development of a band, not simply expecting them to stagnate or copy themselves to death with a new album over and over again. Orthodoxy as a project or a fully established band, started as probably you may know as a solo project. With the debut album, they wanted to root their sound and establish themselves as an old school death metal band taking as primary influences the slow side of morbid Angel and Immolation, but mixing it with their own approach to death and traditional Satanism. With “Ater ignis” they have poured some melody unto it, and mid tempo solos which mostly develop what they are working on the background, as darkness infests all over their work. It is interesting to note, though, that their take on lyrics are pretty well developed in the sense of being original and still retaining the pestilential essence of their death metal: the contrast between adoration of death and darkness while at the same time offering the possibilities of death and darkness as a gateway of personal elevation and transcendence and I could only think of ONA’s influence here. While other death metal bands begin to understand darkness and the bowels of the abyss, Orthodoxy have been navigating through since quite long time ago. Give this band a try and compare why death metal works better for those who have digested and dwelled what others just may want to do in order to gain some credibility.
Penetrator Hammer / Erotic Devil Worship split CD-R
Self Released.
Both bands are just basically parojects of the local thrash act Crown of Worms, as both share common members. Penetrator Hammer obviously have something in common with Crown of Worms, although their direction is filthier kind of Black thrash. On the other side, E.D.W shows that the composer have been listening too much Carphatian Forest / Nattefrost and therefore GG Allin. Even a GG Allin cover is included. Basically both recordings share a common production but differ in their basic premises.

Pensées Nocturnes “Grotesque” CD
Lesacteursdelombre rec
This is the second album. This French project coulbe be named as a musical experiment influenced and constructed by many kinds of music: from black metal, to symphonic elements, “avantgarde metal”, as the label describes it. I don’t know, the level of musicianship is astonishing, but I still call it for what it is: a complex musical approach which will give you a new experience with each listen. This is clearly not a black metal album, but a mixture of many elements which flow smoothly at times, and extremely chaotic as well.

Pervogoat s/t comp. CD
Breath of Pestilence.
Ok, this is another primitive Finnish rarity of the old school of Black Metal. Pervogoat was basically a one man BM project coming from Finland (although on their demos he got some help from a drummer), which released a couple of demos between 1996 and 1997 and then vanished into Oblivion. But, it seems that he got some recognition over there even if the style displayed in these recordings are basic and primitive, but had a sense of Black Metal integrity and basically shows a rude and raw form of self expression.
First demo is pretty primitive, after way too long intro, their black metal rages, basically this demo if pretty primitive although it has some sense of originality.
On the second demo everything is better now, the songs are more complex and there’s a sense of melody that the previous stuff didn’t have. And this is good. I bet that if the project would have continued, it would has developed some more, but well…
AS for the bonus tracks, basically they are some unnamed songs which started to get influences never seen on previous recordings. I don’t know if this is positive or not, they are still primitive of course but for some reason the project ended with those. I don’t know how important has been Pervogoat for the Finnish Black Metal scene frankly as they label hasn’t included any bio or text whatsoever, lyrics haven’t been included either, so I can’t comment on that. Get this compilation a try, if you’re into primitive and honest black metal the good old Finnish way.
Pope Heathen Scum « Lady killer » CD-R
Self-released.
Besides the well known band Mentors, dr. Heathen scum (bass) has delivered a new solo effort after a long time and many side-projects such as the The Church of el Duce (reviewed on the previous issue). I’d dare to say that this one is better, though, not only in terms of production and overall sound, but also in song writing, which is by far much more mature and complex than before. A nice touch here is the addition of that hammond Organ, which fits very well into those rock n roll/ heavy metal oriented songs.
But then again, this is only a cdr, well done but it’s a cd-r anyway...It’s very clear that they have expended a lot of time and effort in recording these songs, but a cd-r doesn’t do justice to the quality of these songs.
Anyway, I won’t name any special song in here, as all of them are of quality, and you should really pay attention to this release.
This one is available through cdbaby.com
Pope Heathen scum “Masterpiece” CD-R
Self-Released.
And finally this is the new solo album, as usual presented in an interesting but at the same time austere way: In a gatefold sleeve with a Cd-r.
Well, to the point: The production for this new album is very good, and the formula kept on the previous “lady Killer” is still present, that is: porno hard rock / heavy metal with some hammon keyboards here and there. There’s HUGE emphasis on the melodies and this time the songs sound a little bit harder than the previous album, which is good. But anyway the’re a couple of “mellow” sounding songs as well.
I guess that the whole travelings throughout Asia must have influenced Dr Scum as well, becsuse this time you’ll hear a couple of Oriental music samples scattered here and there.
Even if the songs are well composed and executed, I’m still preferring the previous “lady killer”. Perhaps I do enjoy more songs from that album!
Anyway, this is a solid release to listen to while awaiting the new album from the Mentors! Contact: sbroy@aol.com
Primogenorum “Damned hearts in the Abyss of Madness”CD
Forever plagued records
This black metal band hails from Ukraine, and at this point, being formed in 2008, they have released nothing less than 2 albums and a number of splits and demos.
After reading the label’s own interpretation of Primogenorum’s music, I definitely can relate to their statement “this is not for everyone”. Why not? Perhaps the keyword resides in a single word: simplicity. And that simplicity in creating raw and primitive riffs turns them into a very asphyxiating recording. That simplicity makes me think that some of the riffs I’m listening now I’ve listened to before on some other recordings. And that may be so, but Primogenorum’s creativity goes beyond the mere fact of playing basic riffs, but the ability they have to transform them into something bizarre and claustrophobic. This is limited, but I’d suggest you that before attempting to buy this, you should give it a try. Perhaps, indeed, it is for you.
Prosanctus Inferi “Pandemonic Ululations of Vesperic Palpitation” LP / CD
Hellsheadbangers recs.
Intrincated Simplicity. With those two words I dare to comment about this debut album. When I received the demo directly from the band I knew something was coming. The demo sounded extraordinarily massive and powerful. Short and direct songs, their primitive brutality matched somehow the intrincacy of the riffs and the labyrinth of the lyrics. Now, here in the debut, the band follow the same parameters, but intensified to a point that the listening experience of the whole album is a tedious and rewarding experience at the same time. Just 26 minutes are more than enough for a band that doesn’t need more time to unleash completely their intrincated chaos and vomits scattered throughout the album.
Prosanctus Inferi “Noctambulous Jaws Within Sempiternal Night” LP/CD
Nuclear War Now prod
Three years have passed since the release of the first album and the band have showed a big improvement indeed. “Pandemonic Ululations...” was complicated and at the same time very direct assault. Now, with this album, the band has learned how to use their chaotic and at the same time intrincated elements but adding some catchiness as well. The songs are pretty much more developed, well thougth and well composed and the new drummer seem to follow very well the guitar paterns and fill the small holes here and there, adding a new dimension and textures to the riffs and structures. Honestly, i can’t figure out yet how these gentlemen are going to replicate live beings just three members. Best songs? I couldn’t name them. It just simply wouldn’t be fair as every piece possess unique elements. And, as for the lyrics, they are as bizarre as the music, revealing the ways of the intrincacy of flesh and darkness...
Get your copy, this is an original act , something very hard to find nowadays.
Pungent Stench / Mentors “The Pungent Stench Sessions” CD
Self Released
Ok, as you should know by now, Pungent Stench split up few years ago. But they managed to record an album with Heathen Scum from the well known Mentors. And here it is the result. I think that this release will please the fans of both bands, which I think have a lot in common. The songs are essencially typical later Pungent S. stuff (mainly groovy riffs) with melodic elements and traditional Mentors’ lyrics.
Supposedly these songs are quite unfinished (the band split up in the middle of the recording) , that is, they haven’t included lead guitar / solos on most of the songs, but they sound good enough anyway.
You can buy this piece of “Rape Metal” at cdbaby.com
Pungent Stench “Smut Kingdom” CD/LP
Dissonance records
At last, the album which was recorded over 10 years ago, now it is properly released together with the re-release of their previous discography, which had been abducted by Nuclear Blast and also by the inner conflicts between the band members. So, Smut Kingdom would be the swan song for the band and honestly I wasn’t expecting much after the semi-disappointment with “Ampeauty”. Obviously the band is no longer what they used to be during the 90’s, and to me, the last good album was their more than decent comeback “Masters of Morals”.
Here, with Smut Kingdom, Don Cochino and the boys do exactly what is expected from them to do: at least they try to compose catchy, groovy songs with cynical offensive and funny lyrics spiced with their typical sense of black humor they’re known for, but unfortunately, this isn’t enough to keep my attention. Honestly speaking, the songs aren’t their best here. There are a couple of good tracks, perhaps the first 2 tracks, plus “smut king”, and perhaps some other, but the rest is just bland and uninspired. They have even hired the services of 3 well known vocalists to keep things interesting, but even so…what else can I say, I have grown up listening to pungent Stench, I do like practically everything they have recorded; perhaps “Club Mondo…” was their weakest spot, but anyway, any new Pungent album is always welcomed to me…this one didn’t fulfill my expectations entirely but at least I’ve got some good new enjoyable tracks to listen from time to time.
Putrid – “proclaim the pest” ADV – 2014 CD-R
Self released.
This cd-r is basically a promo featuring four tracks from their upcoming first full length album entitled “The Triumph of Impurity”.
I’ve listened to this Peruvian band since the release of their first demo “Mountain of Megiddo”, and all I can say is that this band continues to struggle in order to find the right sound for them, or at least that is the impression I had after listening to this adv cd-r. While the first demo was an exploration and festering of influences ranging from thrash, death and even black metal, this new Putrid sounds way more straight forward, aggressive and concise. This time the riffing is more oriented towards black and death metal. In fact I’d say that the songs are quite well balanced because all of them feature both elements which in fact were well combined and the musicianship this time is tighter and much more prolific when they need it to be. This advance doesn’t show the definitive mix but anyway what they wanted to show is here.
Let’s see what they’ll achieve after listening to the whole album.
Putrid / Impure Consecration "Conjurations upon the Impending demise"CD
Espiritus Inmundos Records.
This is an interesting split album between two bands which, for some reason get along pretty well even if their perspectives of making music are somewhat different.
Let's start with th North American based Death Metallers Impure Consecration. First of all, I didn't have any notion about this band's existence. But, judging by their limited discography, they must be quite a new act. But this fact doesn't mean that they do sound amateurish, because they don't. Impure Consecration plays a brutal North american influenced Death Metal, with a few chganges, and tempo variations here and there, which make the music an interesting opener for this split. However, the recording quality of the songs do vary, meaning that the band didn't record these fo this split exclusively. They even have included 2 live recordings, which I think they are just fillers.
in the other hand, prior to the release of their debut album, the locals blackened death metal combo Putrid have taken extra care and effort in the recording of heir side of this split, as all 4 songs presented here were recorded exclusively for this release. I think that finally this band has settled an own style of Blackened death metal as exemplified on their previous advance cd, reviewed above. The band have left almost all the thrash and even melodic elements portrayed on their debut demon in favour of a completely brutal, fast and concise black/death metal spiced with some solos here and there. This release, of course is limited so you should act fast.

Putrid “Triumph of Impurity” CD
Lord of the Flies records.
It has been quite a few months since this band used to spread a promo cd containing 3 advance tracks from this soon to be released album. Well in fact they have been quite busy in arranging everything properly for this release, an what we have here is the final product.
Putrid have overcome some line up changes and also some changes in sound, from being an hybrid of black / death / thrash metal, and after that being solidifying their compositions in favor to a more black death oriented sound. Now, with this album, I could say that Putrid have transmuted into a very death metal sound. Sure, here on this album you’ll find tracks which were composed before the rest and therefore still show remnants of an incipient violent black death metal sound influenced by Black witchery, but also, here they have included newer tracks which are entirely death metal, even with some influences from old school death metal. This variety is what makes this album interesting enough to keep it playing until the end.
They have even ventured to arrange and execute proper solos, which was a rarity back then, and mid tempo passages not often shown on previous releases.
Ass for the lyrics, they are oriented accordingly into tales of the Putrid and the dead, complemented very well by the artwork of the local Luciferian artist Alegría Sabogal.
The production is quite clear and powerful although being this album a very guitar oriented album, the cymbals should have been left behind the guitars and not on the front row. Despite of this, and if you’ve been following this band, then you’ll find out their difference in sound and evolution.

Putrid / Lethal Infection split cd
“Morbid Chants from Southamerican abyss”
Espiritus Inmundos rec/Ritos de muerte records
This is properly said, an Split cd containing already released and recorded tracks for the side of Putrid, and a brand new recording from the Chilean Lethal Infection.
As I said, Putrid (Peru) basically presents 6 tracks spawned from different eras , and already re-recorded live for their Hell Sessions which is basically a video recording of different acts on their own studio. So, all in all, these 6 tracks represent different stages from a band which started playing black / thrash metal but with time, they have started taking influences from death metal bands such as Morbid Angel and Angelcorpse. AS a matter of fact, the first track here is very influenced by Angelcorpse, and the rest, may be as well to a different extent, but also they have added some melodic black metal elements complemented by their chaotic solos. On the fifth track, you can hear some crust elements as well, due to the guitarist futile participation on a local crust band.
Regarding Lethal infection, this Chilean band offers an orthodox mixture of black thrash metal with interesting, clean and well played solos and all in all good compositions, which they aren’t special per se but anyways they’re very enthusiast in what they’re doing. Check them out and basically you’ll be introduced into the music of both bands.

Pathetic / Putrid “Devorando Carne Divina” CD/LP
Espiritus Inmundos prods / Pentagram records
This is an split of two acts which show their display and mastery for their own kind of death metal, both written and performed from a different perspective.
For the side of Pathetic, they are a pretty young band coming from Canada, and , during the course of their short career, they have spawned a couple of EPS and this split. They do play some sort of death metal focused on low growls, low tuned guitars hidden behind them and their constant and passive drumming, making their kind of death metal some sort of stagnated and visceral, and whose lyrics are motivated by diverse social issues which result in death and depravation. In such a way, their death metal works somehow.
As for Putrid, they are a by far more experienced band, with many previous released and therefore, they have had enough time to experiment with their sound, which has been always morphing and developing itself from some mix of black, death and thresh metal to the point of becoming an act with a pure death metal approach and influenced very much by Angelcorpse, which is clearly exemplified by this release. All the melody and slow development of the tracks have given space to a much more dynamic approach, where there’s no room for bridges but the riffs flow one after another without warning, and strengthened by unexpected soloing, although not complex but chaotic. The lyrics, originally oriented towards a mere critic of Christianity, are timidly giving place to hints of transcendence towards a surpassed vision of fallen Christianity in favour to occult worship, even if their rhetoric may sound a bit messed up.
Anyway, this is a solid split and a very good choice for those wh are looking for two different kinds of perspective exposed within death metal.

Putrid “Antichrist Above” CD
Gods of War prod.
The local band Putrid became one of the most the most prolific and constant composing and releasing music in the whole Peruvian scene. And with each release they go further and further in establishing a mutated musical perspective. From a sound which was basically an amalgam between black, death and thrash metal, to an almost entirely death metal sound. But ion the process, they have depurated all elements which in some way or another distracted the listener from a straight and dynamic listening experience. The result of this process could be seen on this release. While the previous album still retrained elements from their original phase, this one just mutated to the point of maintaining all necessary parts to make their brand of death metal fast, very dynamic and direct. And in such a way, their sound which has gained notorious influence from Angelcorpse, also I’d dare to say the Brazilian Abhorrence and the form given by Slayer to their album “Reign in Blood”, (where the band pay a little homage on this record). The result is an album which must be listened in a row, intense, concise and direct. Of course, they have been experimenting in the past by adding a few solos here and there, they have become a necessity now, and while they are in no way prolific as in Angel Corpse, the intention of giving the music an even more chaotic atmosphere is still there.
As for the lyrical department, they have abandoned the perspective of a social critic to the local catholic institution in a way, in favor to a more generic, simpler and direct attacks toward Christ and their church. They are pretty naïve to be honest, but in the context of this album does it really matter? This album is to be listened to compulsively and in those terms it offers what the band intended in the first place.
Putrid Morgue / Demonomancy split CD
Necronausea recs.
Anyone coming from the early 90’s, probably may remember the short life of both of these Peruvian projects. Both released one demo/rehearsal and then died without anyone noticing. But the point here is if these recordings are of enough quality to be unleashed once again. And in such regards, both are similar.
For the side of Putrid morgue, they were a grind death metal band influenced by Beherit, early Sarcofago and perhaps Napalm Death, and these tracks clearly show these influences stripped down to their most primitive and minimalistic level, almost to the point of sounding totally amateurish and garage like. Anyway, perhaps there may be people who still remember them and will find great to have once again these tracks on cd.
As for Demonomancy, this was the band of the now defunct ex-singer of the local act Saram Scivit, known as Christian “Burzum” Bernedo. This project only released this demo called “Befoo Wereld”. It is quite strange that most of the band members came from Grind noise bands but they decided to participate in this recording which curiously turned out pretty well even if these tracks are primitive and show a level of primitivism and rawness. This is mid tempo black metal basically influenced by several bands of the genre including Burzum of course from where they borrowed the track “Tomhet” serving as interludes, which is something I still can’t understand, using another band’s music on a debut demo. Anyway. Both bands are raw, primitive and after releasing their debut demo/rehearsal, simply died.
QUEMOS S/T CD
Golden Procession prod.
Quemos is a local project, and this is the debut album. Despite the anonymity of the members, and after listening to it I’d say that it is understandable their stand, as the sound offered by Quemos doesn’t require further explanation as a project.
First of all, I don’t recognise this as “music” per se, as I think it is not. I could describe this album as an “abstract” sort of experiment. And even if the album acts as a whole, I do think that everything revolves around the vocals and not the other way around. And certainly, I’ve found the lyrical concepts of desperation and failed pacts as the core of this album. The slow recitations are accompanied by “musical” elements such as synths, slow paced drums and occasional guitar work. Individually they wouldn’t do much, but combined with those guttural chants (which could work better if they would have been recited faster I think) the formula works somehow.
This album is composed by 2 long tracks and an appendice which serves as an outro. I won’t compare this to any other established act, though, as Quemos have found a particular sound with just 1 album on their own.
Buy this and enjoy the cult of Quemos.

Rahowa “überfolk” LP
Unknown.
Ok let’s see. This is NOT a new Rahowa album to begin with. Also, this is NOT an official album either. Therefore, this LP is a bootleg without a doubt, as it has been confirmed by the people involved. These collection of songs were recorded almost 9 years ago to begin with, they are not part of any set of old songs by Rahowa. But instead, this is a project and a collaboration between Mr. Burdi from Rahowa and some other people. They have agreed to record some tracks and release them later. Well, these tracks are not in their final form, but they have been released anyway. So, basically, these songs are just demos, and their properly recorded versions should be released later but this time officially. Never mind, I’ve been waiting to listen to these tracks for a long time now (I had previously listened to My Ancestors and the Changes neofolk cover “Waiting for the Fall”). So, in a sense, this release serves its purpose. Basically these collection of songs could be indeed be named as a continuation for Rahowa in the sense that at least some of them do follow the same musical line, being hard rock oriented songs with lyrics focused in a romantic vision of ancestry and heritage basically. Some other tracks, could be labeled as “neofolk”, consisting basically in acoustic guitars, flutes and synths. Not a single bad track on this LP. The recording quality varies from track to track but being these songs jus demos, it is understandable. Also, this LP comes with a booklet containing a long and insightful interview with Mr. Burdi which would raise a brow or two.
RavenBanner “…and Ravens sing our Glorious Past” digi CD
Breath of Pestilence prod.
Well, first and foremost, I must say that this is basically a re-issue. The original recording was released by Totenkopf propaganda years ago. But now, everyghng has been improved over the original release, from sound which has been remastered, to the aesthetics and overall layout.
Ok, for those who haven’t heard of this band before, this is basically a Greek project involving members of Der Sturmer, Wolfnacht and Alastor. AS they have stated on their bio, this project was a short term project and didn’t have further ambitions than recording a few tracks and that’ all. And as such, they have succeeded. Ravenbanner is basically a primitive and minimalistic sounding Black Metal band, with a certain number of known influences, which may very between Nordic Black Metal from the 90’s and the typical Greek Black Metal sound. Honestly, the band is not bad for what they wanted to chive with it, but when compared to the main bands of the individuals involved, which are top quality stuff, this seems to be a second rate project. And perhaps that’s what they wanted with Ravenbanner. This release compiles the six first tracks which are basically this album, plus some demo tracks released in the year 2000. This release stands for what it is, and should be of interest to any into the previously mentioned bands.
Ravencult “Morbid Blood” LP / CD
Hells Headbangers
Honestly, even if I have known this band only by name, never had the opportunity to listen to them, until now. And yes, I can realise why HHR signed with them as this is the kind of sound which seems to be very appreciated by this label, as it uses a lot of thrashy elements mixed with their traditional sort of black metal. As said before, I can’t compare this effort with their previous stuff, but it seems that there is a lot of people out there who appreciate this kind of sound and influences. I do, to a certain extent, even if they do not offer something new or truly amazing at least to my ears.
“Morbid Blood” is a good album nevertheless, perhaps a bit too thrashy for my own taste but luckily their Black metal approach hasn’t been totally diluted.
Regarde Les Hommes Tomber “Exile” CD
Les Acteurs de L’ombre prod.
This is a French act releasing a second álbum. It seems that this French label is very interested in releasing bands with a high level of musicianship and perspective when composing and playing their music. This band is no exception. Well, first of all, according to the label, their music is labeled as “Post- Black Metal”, but I have little clue as to what does this title mean in the first place. “Regarde…” does play in fact Black metal with a high level of musicianship when arranging their songs, and they’re very clever in doing so, because their melodies are in fact pretty simple and straight forward.. But they know how to arrange their riffs in order for them to sound complicated and “progressive” so to speak. And I’d say that this works for some extent. Regarde’s music can be challenging and interesting to listen to, because, at least, their black metal basis is still present. But they take the risk of falling into a realm of being technical for the sake of being technical, and this fact could harm their art, as it is beginning to show with “Exile”.
Revenge “Behold.Total.Rejection” LP/CD
Season of Mist records.
I still can’t understand why Revenge have signed with S.O.M. I know, they are a big label and that would mean they could get a better promotion, but the question is, do they really need this? Do they really need that S.O.M release 4 or 5 versions of the same albums to please all of those stamp collectors kids out there?
I do think, that Revenge stand on their own feet basically, They need no bigger promotion, as their audience SHOULD be limited, restricted. Not released merely as merchandise with different faces. But anyway, let’s move to the album itself. Well, it is of course a Revenge album, so, you should know already how it is supposed to sound like. The difference between their albums is basically the production, and here, they have given special attention to the sound of the drum, and have buried the guitars in the mix. But not the solos of course. Vermin (from Axis of Advance) is still in charge of guitars, and I must say that his solos still sound pretty similar and predictable, althougb there’s an intention to change them a bit.
The lyrics, of course, are not completely included (at least in my LP version, which is the simplest of all), but the doctrine of Revenge is widely exposed in previous albums. All in all, it’s revenge, so it’s the very same chaotic style. If you can’t figure out the differences between albums, there is no reason for you to buy this.
Revenge “Strike.Smother.Dehumanize”LP/CD
Season of mist.
Thing is, what can I say about this band that I haven’t said already? What do Revenge do with a new album that it turns out to be different from the rest and at the same time equal? With this album they continue to follow with their doctrine of the Superion, the lone Wolf, the outsider, the outlaw and the social predator. Their contempt for the mass and the flock remained intact and their hate fuelled hymns only reinforces that fact. You already know what to expect from this band and there’s absolutely no additional remark to do here. Despite of this statement, this is the first time that I can listen to the band copying themselves for the first time. That’s right; there are a few riffs that I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to before. Perhaps that’s something unconscious, unpremeditated, I don’t know.
But well, how does this album differ from the rest? I think that this time they have opted for a clearer production. You can basically hear everything, even during the chaotic sections, and the bass is more prominent this time. Is this positive? I think that their riffing shouldn’t be buried in the mix to make this band unique. It is their aggression and utter hatred which makes them unique, and it is always a good thing to discover new approaches to their music, new optics to their sound. In such a way, this album, without offering something really new, keeps their audience hungry for more sonic violence.
Rito Profanatorio “Necro-Ritual” CD
Tyrants records.
Ok, I just have received this promo cd from this local band which I haven’t had the chance to listen to it before and I must say that it’s quite good.
Black thrash is what we got here, with obvious infleunces from the well known old Brazilian acts and even the classic thrash influence from Europe. All of that mixed with their own ideas and raw but interesting musicianship. Crazy solos btw!.
This recording is spiced with some intros from some obscure movies which complement well the atmosphere of the recording.
Features a Sabbat Cover.

Ritual Suicide “Consecration Bound in Cruor” CD
Forever plagued records
This is an album originally released during 2013, on a limited edition tape, but re-released properly on cd with new cover art and new layout.
This is a unique and strange album and a really strange band, Ukranian by the way, which uses black metal as a form of expression but whose lyrics are mainly inspired by vampirism and death.
I do have to say that I’m having problems at trying to decipher this band’s riffing, as they’re quite unique and a-typical in a very odd manner. I could name old Darkthrone as one of their influences but that wouldn’t be fair enough. Their way of performing songs and creating riffs is quite interesting in the sense that every sense of melody is obliterated, the riffs are quite bizarre, cold and I’d say that they work for me in small doses, listening the whole album in a row is quite tedious but perhaps that’s their intention to begin with.
I won’t describe this even more because this album must be experienced first and foremost.
Rome “Flowers from exile” LP
Trisol Music Group.
I’ve never been interested too much in this project, even if I have heard of a couple of albums. However, this album proved to be different from the rest to my ears. And perhaps that’s the reason why it has been released on wax with such a care. Flowers from exile is composed of 12 songs which deal basically with the happenings and events of the Spanish civil War. Even one old Spanish Anarchist song called “a las barricadas” has been taken as an influence to compose the song “The secret songs of Europe”. The interesting matter about this album is that the songs do follow a sequence and have been carefully planned. The melodies here are simply outstanding and very catchy and it’s a neofolk album simply put, well done. The lyrics are written in Jerome’s particular way, and are thoughtful and evocative, and they complement themselves very well with the melodies. Best songs: The accidents of gesture, Odessa, The secret sons of Europe, To die among strangers, we who fell in love with the sea, s/t track, and the atmospheric “Flight in formation”. Just grab a copy of this album on lp if you can. The cd is available as well.

Rotten Evisceration “Ancient Grave Ascencion” CD
Guts and Blood Records.
Rotten Evisceration is a Death Metal band based in Peru and focused upon the side of splatter gore regarding the lyrical content, with all the possible influences you could think of when talking about this specific subgenre.
For some reason, they formed in 2009 but they have managed to record and release this debut album during 2018. Previously, they had released a demo called “Raped and Headless” in 2011 which basically consists of the same material contained in this album. So, this motivates me to think that either this is their swansong and they wanted to release those songs in a proper manner before splitting up, or they were inactive during 7 years and couldn’t compose new tracks so they had to use what they had at hand.
Now, regarding these songs: to be honest, this kind of death metal generally is not of my interest, most of these bands with splatter gore themes just sound plain repetitive and uninspired, but that’s my personal opinion. So, in such a way, I expected this band to sound exactly like that. Their sound is formulaic, yes, but at least they have managed to keep their songs dynamic enough to catch my attention during the course of the album, which lasts less than 30 minutes. The lyrics aren’t included, and I think that in some way they aren’t needed, as the music does the job alone and certainly is an album which would work very well when played live. That’s all I could say about it. If you’re interested in this kin d of death metal, go ahead.

Ruho “Pathways through Flesh” CD / LP
Bestial Burst Records.
This Finnish band has been a good surprise indeed because in fact it differs from most Finnish bands in musical approach. They say that their music is rawer than the rest of Finish acts. I won’t say it’s rawer, but very minimalistic instead. Yes, their songs generally revolve around just one riff, exposed, analyzed and studied throughout. But, unlikely many other bands that have this approach because they are unable to play or compose better, Ruho exploits to the maximum to these possibilities, and every song is a unique experience. Being minimalist doesn’t mean being unable to handle an instrument. As for the lyrics, they do explore many subjects already used by other bands but written under a personal perspective.
Ruho have explored and achieved a personal sound and that’s why this release is so great.

Ruho “mouth of extinction” MLP / mcd
Triumph of death records.
I do remember when I reviewed Ruho’s first album. It was very primitive , minimalistic and at the same time very innovative. When they played a riff, they exploited to the max that riff in every way possible and in such a way they created interesting songs. Now, this mini album is a proper follow up, even if this time all the instruments have been recorded by one member.
Ok, Moth of extinction is different from the debut in the sense that this time the songs are clearly more structured and based on riffs, and I’d say without being mistaken that the minimalism has been left behind as they are focused into composing more complex songs. Sure, they still sound archaic in a sense and the riffs are still distinctive and original, and tht’s what makes this band interesting. And that’s a compliment for a band playing a overused style of traditional black metal. Here you’ll find 4 long songs. You should give them a try.
